Greetings from the Baby 411 book! Here’s a round-up of what’s news this month!

================

1. Pull ipecac out of your medicine cabinet!

Prior to November 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) routinely advised parents to keep a bottle of ipecac in their medicine cabinet to induce vomiting if a child swallowed certain poisonous substances. The AAP now recommends that parents call poison control at (800) 222-1222 for all accidental poisonings and NOT have ipecac in the home. Parents should call 911 if their child has convulsions, lack or breathing, or unconsciousness.

The reason for the change in policy is that ipecac is not terribly effective, potentially dangerous if it is used with certain types of poisonings, and has potential for abuse.

2. ELF STEW: The best tips for toy safety.

Last year, there were 212,000 emergency room visits and 13 deaths due to toy-related injuries. No child should die because of a toy. What many parents don’t realize is that just because a toy is on the market doesn’t mean that it is safe or tested.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (www.cpsc.org) submits an annual report of dangerous toys. They suggest that parents make a list and “check it twice” against theirs for toys that may cause more harm than entertainment for your little ones.
A good mnemonic to remember toy hazards (ala Dr Brown):

ELF STEW

E---Electrical toys- Can cause electrical shock or burns. Try battery powered instead.
L---Loud noises- ‘Outdoor’ toys can cause nerve damage and hearing loss.
F---Flying objects-Can cause eye injuries.
S---Sharp edges and points-Cause abrasions, cuts, and puncture wounds.
T---Tiny parts- Nothing smaller than the diameter of a toilet paper roll should be in the home of a child under 3 years of age. Watch for doll’s eyes and buttons-be sure they are secure.
E---Emotional hazards- Violent videogames and toy weapons give kids the wrong message.
W---Wrong toy for the wrong age- A recipe for disaster.

3. Holiday safety tips—keeping the tree safe and more.

Here are some important tips to consider while you are preparing your home for the holidays:

• Toddlers are fascinated with Christmas trees. Be sure children are observed at all times.
• Beware of tree trimmings that look like food. Your child might try to have a snack.
• Avoid sharp or breakable ornaments.
• Know that poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are all poisonous.
• Beware of grandparents! They often leave their medications out on the countertop in the guest bathroom. Heart and blood pressure medications can be very dangerous if ingested by a child.
