To all our Baby 411 readers:
The Centers for Disease Control revised their guidelines for who is eligible to receive the flu vaccine as some areas of the country have adequate supply.
Here's what the new guidelines mean for your kids:
Children who are household contacts of high risk groups may now receive the flu vaccine. (Previously, only siblings of infants under 6 months of age could get vaccinated.)
So, here are the children who are eligible:
1. Kids whose siblings (or other family members) have asthma, chronic medical diseases, or immune deficiencies.
2. Kids with siblings under the age of 2 years old in the house.
3. Kids whose moms are pregnant.
Families should contact their healthcare provider or local health department to find out about flu vaccine availability in their community. *Dr. Brown's practice is following the CDC's expanded guidelines and will also administer vaccine to parents of children in high risk groups until vaccine supply is depleted.
Thus far, the 2005 flu season is following a typical pattern, with very few cases nationwide. Flu season usually peaks in the months of January and February. Only New York state is reporting widespread numbers of patients with the flu. Bottom line: it's not too late to get vaccinated!
