Hi all --
We are expecting our first this fall. We received a pack and play as a gift, and we are planning on putting it in our room for the first month or so and using it as a bassinet. Has anyone else done this? Pros, cons?
Thanks in advance.

We did and it worked out great fro us. I had the bassinet set up in the living room and the pack and play in our bedroom. DD slept in either of those two places for the first 3 months when quite by accident I discovered she would sleep in her crib. But, we left the pack in play in our bedroom for a long time because you can see it from our master bath and I would plop DD in there when I needed to shower. We plan to do the same with DD#2 due this Dec.

The biggest con is if baby won't sleep in it! Our first DS hated the PNP bassinet, so we used it as a changing table/clothes storage instead.

We intended to use the bassinet function of the pack n play but didn't like it. We couldn't find a co-sleeper in a local store back then so he ended up sleeping in a pram at first. Then moved to a smaller portable crib in our room, before eventually going in his room at seven or eight months. We will do a co-sleeper next time.
We did use the pack n play a bunch for traveling once he was about nine months and older, but we just didn't like it for the infant stage. Like Lori, it was a clothes and stuff storage center for quite some time!

We were planning on doing that, but borrowed a Moses basket and used that in our room instead. We left the PNP set up downstairs and used it "stash" DD and to change her diaper.
When DD got older and could sit on her own, we took off the bassinet part and used it as a toy storage/play area when I couldn't watch her.

We used out P&P as a bassinet and changing table and had absolutely no problems with it. Our son slept comfortably there, and we were able to move it into any part of the house. It was great.

Baby outgrew the bassinet in 2 weeks... assembled the Pack 'n Play and have been using it since with no complaints.

go with the pack and play. we used it as a bassinet for the first 3 months, and the changing table for the first 6; i love the vibrate function - it was kind of like a snooze alarm for me. :) sometimes he wouldn't sleep in it, so we would just have him sleep with us. i think he would have had the same problem with a bassinet.
if you must have a bassinet, i'd get one second hand at a consignment store / craigslist / garage sale and not spend the $$.
the pack and play will be useful later.
