Hi,

We have a low platform bed (height 18 inches). Bassinets, even on their lowest setting, seem to be too high to put next to our bed. Any suggestions for what bassinet/cradle I can get that will be almost level with our bed for easy breastfeeding and access to newborn? I know arm's recah do a universal co-sleeper that is low but I don't like the look of it and it seems pricy.

You might try a Moses basket. It can simply be placed on the floor or a platform could be built for it. My DD was given a cradle that was found in an antique shop that might also work, it's one of the old-fashioned hooded cradles with the curved foot and headboard. The construction is very simple and you could probaby have one re-created by someone who's got a bit of carpentry experience (and I do mean a bit, I am pretty sure I could make one easily). HTH

The ILs have an old bassinet they used with their kids, and it lifted right off the base. Not sure if they make them like this anymore. MIL told me they also used it to take the baby in the car!

ETA: Combi makes a neat playard (seen it IRL but do not have one) that has a detachable bassinet that looks like it can be used on the floor or with an additional base. I think bassinets that come with PNPs are usually smaller than just bassinets, though:
