We live in Central Texas. It doesn't get terribly cold here unless it is rainy. Really there is probably about 7 days that are miserable, and that is it. I have a fleece jacket (on the lighter side) and a few sweaters and lots of l/s stuff. Do you think layering will be sufficient? Or should I buy her a real coat?

Hi Joey,
I live in Dallas. I was lucky to receive a red suede Gap coat as a gift for dd. But if I didn't, I would just go with the fleece jacket and sweaters. You could just bring an extra blanket for the car seat/stroller. Just MHO.

I live in N. Dallas and I am going to buy a coat for DS. There is a fleece peacoat at TCP that I am thinking about getting. I don't think I will be taking him out much on really cold days..but if I need a coat, then he certainly needs one. hth

Will you be doing any travelling to cooler climates? I know we are going to New Mexico at Christmas, so I have bought DS some cold weather clothes. I found a Gymboree winter jacket on ebay for $10.
Other than that, I would say you can probably just layer her.

One thing about the hat that you may have already thought of. I recommend getting one with a chin strap. At 6 months dd started pulling all hats off her head. I got her a cute Gymboree beret but haven't figured out how I'm going to keep it on.:-)

This won't help you for this year, but maybe for next year.
We live in Atlanta and maybe my son will wear a winter coat for all of a month. There are a few days when it's cold enough for a winter coat to be a necessity, but we can usually get away with layering.
What I do is buy a winter coat at the end of the season and put it away for the next year. The past 3 years, I've spent no more than a whopping $7 each on his winter coats.
I spend more $ on a good fleece jacket, like Lands End, since I know he'll get a lot of wear out of it.

I think that winter coats are not as necessary when they are babies. As your child gets older and starts to play on the playground in the winter and not be carried everywhere he goes, you'll definitely need a winter coat. For winter during baby-time, I think a think sweater or nice fleece jacket is enough. Most of the time you'll probably have a blanket on him in the carseat or stroller so that will help as well.
