View Full Version : WHY is it so difficult to find basic shorts??

Aaarrrggggh! All I want are solid, cotton, loose-fitting, elastic-waist shorts for under $10 a pair in 2T. Is this such a strange and unusual item to want???

I've only found them at Lands End, in 3 colors, 2 of which are sold out.

I need to buy online; I'm sick of schlepping all over the place, it was 93 degrees today, and poor dd has no shorts. :(

Has anyone seen others anywhere???

Frustrated,
Jude

Have you tried Target and Walmart? They have plain, solid cotton shorts for under $4, and they wear pretty well.

ETA: Oops, Sorry! I missed the part about wanting to order online!

OK, how about these from The Children's Place? $5 a pair, and basic cotton. Looks liek they only have gray and yellow left in your size, though.

Gymboree's basics for girls have been $9.99. There are some non-girly colors like blue, light teal blue, and orange.

Did you see your email? I got your LGC tee in 2T!

Best,
Mary

I like Naartjie for their basic shorts. Knit, good over CDs, nice colors. And it's not as hard ordering from them as you might think.

I have that problem finding t-shirts. I don't mind the lettuce edge or a tiny ruffle around the sleeve. I don't mind stripes, but I don't want sayings, decals, logos, or embroidery. Just plain t-shirts. Children's Place had some but DH was being difficult and now they are all out. I had one of their white ones but it vanished off the face of the earth. When I do find one, it is always yellow. DD doesn't look good in yellow.

Did you try Old Navy? They are usually pretty bad about unwanted "embellishments" but sometimes they surprise me. Good Luck, I know how frustrating it can be. I'm a completely neurotic shopper, and I'm sure I'll be passing it on to DD.

Veronica - I got all of dd's tees from LL Bean (great colors, great shirts, great prices!) and Zutano (they run big) Plain, solid tees - I love 'em! HTH! :)

Buy Buy Baby has some online in a few different colors in 2T. $2.99 each. I've never bought these but I've bought the bike shorts and they've held up pretty well. HTH.

They have them in the Buy Buy Baby stores as well. Jude, there's one on 7th Ave and 24th/25th Street.

Have you tried www.basicbrilliance.com?

Basic Brilliance was my first thought too but they only seem to have a few pairs of shorts in the sales section.

Mary, those are perfect - but they're all out. :( I'll keep an eye on them, though - thank you for the link!

Thanks, Jana! Those work - I wouldn't have even thought to look there.

However, I'm in the middle of trying to order from them now, and I respectfully disagree; I'm finding it to be a MAJOR PITA. Someone else could have *made* dd a bunch of shorts by now, LOL!

Thanks for the tip!

Not sure if they have them on-line but I just got a few pairs for ds at JC Penney - they had light blue, navy, grey and red for $3.99 each.

One thing I do is send all of the Naartjies my wishlist. Whoever gets back to me first with the most stuff wins. It has worked well for me, every time. And they don't seem to know or care.

I absolutely love these Talbots twill shorts. They are basic, wash very well and are easy on/easy off with elastic all around the waist. I highly recommend them.

Are those a staple at Talbots? I love the look of them but we're a year away from size 2... (should I buy ahead..?)

I have found some at Dillards. They were $9 and wash and wear great. We got one in every color. The shirts to match are nice quality too. You need to size up in the tops. I also bought Hanna pocket sweatshorts in every color. They are a wonderful deal!

Deena-

One of Sophie's most favourite past times is to go "SEE GOATS!" at the zoo. She actually asks every morning if we can go see them. And if I say no goats, she says, "SEE COWS!". We then go through all her fave animals till we get to the dogs, which of course, she can see since they live here.

Strange, huh?

The enigma that is a 2-1/2yo's mind...

Jude,

I don't know if you're still searching, but thought I'd share my find.

Mary inspired me to go to JCPenney yesterday and I found these in the boys section. (I checked the girls section and they were wiped out.) I looked online and couldn't find them, so I took pictures.

They have a cargo pocket on the left leg and a small pocket on the right bum. Best part? On sale for $3.99! They had yellow, red, blue, navy, lime green, and gray. I'm heading over to the mall again on Friday to pick up another pair for my ds and I'd be willing to pick some up for you and mail them to you if you'd like. Just let me know. They had both 24m and 2T, but mostly 2T.

Well, here's my pet peeve. They used to have these in infant sizes too and DS wore them the last 2 years. This year they only had the chambray in infant sizes and introduced a knit short instead. Of course, DS needed the 24 month this summer.

Anyway, my understanding is that the twill shorts are a staple and they have them from 2T all the way up to the upper sizes for Talbots Kids. The SA told me that they were experimenting with the infant sizes this year because so many customers love their knits. So, I think you should be okay next year, but as this year proves to me with the infant sizes, you never know. (I still am asking myself why I didn't stock up last year). The good thing is that you can always return next year if you get the wrong size and they are on sale at the moment. In fact, I was thinking after I posted this that I should stock up for next year and not make the same mistake twice.

I was actually just about to post about Talbot kids. Girls toddler shorts are marked down to $7 and boys shorts were $10.
