I was just wondering what is easier to nurse in... the nursing gowns or regular gowns maybe with a button up front. Thanks ladies

I've never been able to nurse in either one. Too difficult finding your way when it's dark! :)

Instead, I use a short top or a t-shirt and shorts. MUCH easier for me and more comfortable, too.

Either one poses problems. Fumbling with buttons might be more difficult than fumbling with a slit.

I think it would be easier to use two piece pajamas and just push the top up to nurse.

Of course the easiest thing is to just sleep nude :) It's like an open-all-night self-serve diner.

I like 2-piece pajamas too and just lift the top to nurse. Originally, I had a nightgown that buttoned at the top. It works, but it's a pain to unbutton in the middle of the night when DS is very anxious to eat.

Yep, two piece pajamas and just lift the shirt to nurse!

Definitely a 2-piece and just lift the shirt. I never had trouble finding the slit in a gown, but the whole thing was just weird.

Karen, I'm amazed you could sleep nude. I needed a bra and pads lest I wake up in Niagra Falls.

I am a big fan of spaghetti strap tank tops and shorts. I just pull down the straps and voila!

I put one of the waterproof pads we got from the hospital under me, just in case. I usually only leak when she is eating, so I just tuck a burp cloth under the other breast while she eats.

I don't sleep on my stomach, or way over on my side, or that does squish the milk right out of me. I'm just now getting to the point where I don't leak every time she eats.

My breast wouldn't fit through the slit in the nursing gown but I "flashed" my husband and son when the gown would show the slit... don't bother with nursing gowns. I use a PJ's that are shorts and a top and just pull up the top now.

The easiest tops for me to nurse in were nice, loose, easy-to-lift maternity t-shirts.

Early on, when we were cosleeping, I wore tank tops or just a bra -- I was always so hot. When I started going into her room to feed her, it was winter and I was often cold getting in and out of bed so much, so I wore button-down flannel pj's. I found it easier to open the front than to hike up the big flannel shirt.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was going to buy a nursing gown but think I won't bother now. What did you all wear while you were in the hospital? Thanks so much ladies.

Well I use a nursing night gown top (I have my own bottoms) for sleeping at night. I like them and find them easy. I am small breasted so I have no problem getting the breast through. In the hospital, they supplied a nursing gown (everyone wears it, whether or not you are bf) with the slits. I did not buy one until after I left the hospital.

For leaks at night, I wear a sleep nursing bra, and tuck in some pads.

I bought a night gown for the hospital but I hated it. I don't lounge around in pajamas all day so I didn't want to do that in the hospital. Plus, I felt awkward talking to my FIL while I was in PJ's and a robe. I found I was the most comfortable in a largish T-shirt and sweat pants. It was easy to nurse and I looked somewhat dressed for the visitors. Oh, and I wore my bra the whole time I was there also. This way I didn't get engorged.

I bought my own nursing gown but ended up just using the ones from the hospital. Without being gross, you "mess" them up frequently...better to mess theirs than yours. IMHO, keep the nice one for at home.

Girlfriend's guide to pregnancy says wear the hospital gown that they give you for bleeding reasons and I did just that! I asked for ones that really covered well and wore those in the hospital, even when visitors came. After all, if you were in for some other operation, you would be wearing the gown as well. It's amazing how much you bleed after giving birth and why ruin your own nightgown?
