View Full Version : Would you get a swing for your second child?

I got a hand me down swing for my DS, which he never really liked and I got rid of. He was really happy in his vibrating bouncy seat. (FP Kick & Play) I'm looking around at the daily chaos of my house (two dogs, one still a puppy and a three year old) and thinking, hmmmm...I don't think setting the baby on the floor with a bouncy seat is going to work so well the second time around. I was wondering if getting a swing, particularly a cradle swing, and getting the baby out of harms way may not be a bad idea. The only thing is selling my husband on an expensive swing when we didn't need on the first time.

Honestly, I think it'll depend on the child. Kaya used her portable swing for maybe a month, but she also always preferred her FP Kick & Play. But I know some parents who say their DCs have adored their swing. And in some families one of the kids might LOVE their swing while another might not care less or might even hate the thing. So it may actually depend on your child. Swings are not THAT difficult to get, so maybe you could wait until Eve actually arrives?

It depends on the baby! My DS hated the bouncy seat and was so-so on the swing. This time, I borrowed a cradle swing (vs. the open top we had last time) and a nicer bouncy seat, and if neither works for #2, I won't feel so bad about it.

I say go for it!! DS1 HATED the bouncy seat but loved his FP Aquarium cradle swing. DS2 likes the bouncy seat, and LOVES the swing too. It also helped keep him out from under DS1 running around the house. Now that he rolls and I've got him on a nap schedule I don't put him in the swing as much since he'll most likely fall asleep and screw up him naps.

We bought the FP Natures Touch Cradle Swing with DS #2 and loved it. I knew I would need something more to keep the baby up off the floor and happy since I would be chasing a toddler around as well. I don't regret the purchase at all!

Hi Jeanne~ I say go for it, even though you won't know for sure if you made the right decision until later. I have 5 kids (one set of twins) and I can say that while 1 of my kids thought the swing was so-so (preferred my arms at ALL times), the other 4 absolutely loved their swings. I also used the bouncy seats with all of them. I have 2 labs now (that I didn't have with the first 4 kids) and I'm in the same boat as you. A lot of my planning revolved around life with the dogs. Good luck in whatever you choose!

Jeanne, my DS loved, loved, loved his swing! He liked the bouncy seat too, but the swing was by far his favorite. Until he was about 6 mos, it was the just about the only place he would nap. We have the FP aquarium swing. I see swings at my favorite little resale shop all the time for about $40 or $50 and they are in excellent condition. You could also try craigslist - that way it might not be so hard to talk your DH into it.
