I just read on another board about a new VOLVO car seat that can go rear facing to 40 pounds! Anyone else know anything about it? Is it just for use in Volvos? It will be out in 2003.

I emailed volvo customer service and they knew nothing about it! I wondered that also where is it?

Unfortunately, it is only in Europe. They had a problem meeting USA standards, I believe due to the inability to get the necessary recline on the flat US test bench. It may be available here in 2003 depending on if they can petition for an exception to the standards.

Yup. It looked really, really neat. But they haven't be able to get it to work out (see Darren's post for some ideas why) so it isn't being offered. Maybe they have now figured out a new way to design it. But I haven't heard anything new.

Does anyone have any updated information on this?

We just bought the XC90 (in the UK) and are also looking for new car seats for our twins who have almost outgrown their infant seats. The Volvo car seats are rear facing until 18kg. I haven't been able to find much info on these seats. Any info is appreciated!

Darren,

Thanks for your quick reply. Do you think I should be wary about these seats because they don't meet USA standards? I'm obviously looking for the safest option for my girls. Thanks for your opinion!

Hi-

My understanding is that it was NOT an issue where it failed the crash testing. Rather, because of the lack of a recline adjustment and some other issues, it could not even be tested in the first place.

The European test bench and regulations are somewhat different. So, I would not have a problem using this seat if it fits well and is reclined properly in your vehicle. Obviously, this should not be a problem with the Volvo sedans for which it was designed. I don't know if the XC90 seats are similar or not, and I could not advise buying this seat in Europe for use in the USA.
