OK, I'm (hopefully!) years away from DD needing a booster seat (she's 16m), but this puzzles me.

If booster seats are used with a car's "regular" seat belt, and the seat is going into a pre-LATCH vehicle, what actually holds the seat in?

With a LATCH vehicle, do you install the booster as per usualy with the LATCH setup, then have the child use the car's seat belt? If so, then how do you do it in a car without LATCH?

The seat we were looking at in the store (just because it was PINK!) was the Graco TurboBooster.

TIA

As far as i know even if a car has latch the seat stays in place with the seat belt. I think only seats with a harness can be used with latch. I do not think that you would use both and in a bpb you must use the seatbelt.

I think that the booster is more to position the child higher so that the seatbelt fits them correctly, the seatbelt is still what holds the child in place.

Yup...that's how it is, the booster just sits there on the vehicle seat...nothing holds it in place but the child's weight and the seatbelt (it's even recommended you buckle it up when there's no kid in it, so it doesn't fly forward and hit you in a crash!). Some of the combo/harnessed boosters can be left tethered when in booster mode (and early evidence shows that reduces injuries and fatalities in side impact crashes, so maybe by the time your wee one goes into a booster, it WILL be LATCH-able or tether-able...fingers crossed!)
