I can now confirm in a 2004 4Runner, all three fits...

My question is, what is the point of the SAFESTOP

wow that 4 Runner must have 4-6 more inches across teh backseat. You certainly could not do that in the old body style pre2002.

You have the exact carsets I have except the Radian..

the seats are all butted up to each other and there is about 1 inch from each door. I guess I really lucked out.

Nifty-cool :)

There are several measurements taken on the test dummies during crash testing...head excursion, knee excursion, and g-forces on the chest. The Radian supposedly performs so well in the first two (ie, it holds the head and knees back SO well they are unlikely to strike something else in the vehicle like the front seatbacks that would cause injury), that one way to reduce chest g's is to allow the body to slow down more slowly (a non-stretchy strap slows down very quickly...more energy goes into the body), so they put a little 'give' in the harness so that the harness can absorb more of the crash energy, rather than transferring it to the child. Of course, you DO have to stop using it at 40 pounds...I don't know why, exactly...I guess heavier kids stretch the plain belt out enough and don't need any extras to do that? Sometimes regular adult seatbelts have rip out strips to release in a crash to prevent belt injury, too, so it's not a 'new' idea, really, just new for carseats.
