View Full Version : 18"s of Snow - Ugh!!!

Of all weekends to have a blizzard! I'm so upset! My baby shower is Sunday and we're expecting another 10" of snow on Saturday for a total of approx 18" by Sunday!!!

My mom's starting to freak out hoping it will be okay to drive on Sunday. Hoping no one will cancel. I feel bad for her since she went totally out of her way having my shower in a nice catering hall and already paid for 45 people.

To make matters worse, the catering hall is located in a tiny town near the water on Long Island. You have to drive through winding streets and up and down hills to get there. I hope they plow in time and it's not icy.

On top of it, some of my inlaws were planning on shopping for gifts TOMORROW. I know, they're very last minute people. They're not going to any store in a blizzard I know that!

Not only do I have to shlep to Long Island in the snow for the damn shower, but I'll probably get money instead of gifts and will have to go to the babystore myself. I'm so not up to the babystore at 31 weeks pregnant! I hate when people say "I'll give you money and you can buy what you want". I know what I want it's on my registry. Help a pregnant lady out, go to the store and buy the gift for me!!!

UGH!!!! What luck I have!!!

Mare,
I feel for you, sweetie! Here in Eastern PA, we got about a foot of snow this weekend and have spent the last 2 days digging out. I am sorry your shower falls during such a bad time weather-wise - hopefully, you will not have too many gifts to purchase. Try and enjoy it if you can and see if you can dispatch your dh or a friend to pick up the essentials you need for your little munchkin. Good luck!

I know just how you feel!! The night before my baby shower we had a terrible ice storm, and hundreds of thousands of people were without power. I was so worried that no one would show, or that they would feel horribly inconvenienced by my shower.

But you know what? Only one person didn't show, and she had no power, and couldn't even open her garage door. I was so touched by the extra effort people had made to attend -- it was very meaningful to me and I look upon that day with joy.

I hope that you have the same experience!

And, if it's any consolation, I too knew 'exactly' what I wanted and put it on my registry, but ended up returning/exchanging things anyway.

One great benefit of getting money is that you can use it to order your items online, usually for much cheaper than the item sells for in a brick & mortar store. I calculated it out, and ended up saving over $500 by ordering online. I actually had a lot of fun surfing the web in my jammies, finding the best prices.

Have a wonderful shower tomorrow, and Congratulations!!!!

Thanks Lauren & Bethany for your kind words.

I'm still thinking positive. The snow is supposed to taper off by 7pm this evening and they are predicting light rain in the morning on Sunday.

My mom said no one called to cancel so far, but my inlaws have received 7 calls this morning from relatives questioning if it's still on. Don't they understand you have to wait and see how Sunday will be???? Ugh. Plus, DH is now starting to freak out. Saying it should be canceled, no one will show, yada yada yada.... I just don't need this stress. I'm showing up and whose ever there is there. The show must go on!

I do feel really bad for two relatives who's planes were canceled. One in Toronto and one in Florida. They are expected to come in on Sunday morning - both originally scheduled for Friday evening.

I know with the weather conditions it's probably better to receive money than shelp large boxes around in the snow, but I'm just annoyed at people's logic when it comes to registries. It's usually the older relatives who prefer to give money. I have a list of things not yet purchased that I still need and if the weather clears up by Monday I'll hit the baby store and get it over with. There's a few small items and not worth paying the s&h fees for online.

I do agree with you Bethany, that if everyone shows I will be really touched and it will turn out to be really special. It's just the stress before that's hard to deal with.

UGH, Mare. That is SOOO tough!! It just figures, huh? Try your best not to let it stress you out too much. You need to relax and save your mental energy for the road ahead! Just know that everything will work out in the end.

My shower was last Feb. and we had a similar snow storm the night before. Only one person cancelled and we all had a ball. My MIL was a nervous wreck that morning -calling every half hour-is it on? I knew I was going and if my sister and I were the only ones who showed??? so be it. I hope that everything worked out for your shower-I hope that it was a beautiful site. Let us know.

Well, 9 people didn't show. And it's funny, cause the people who lived the closest canceled while the people who had the longest commute made it! :)

Everything was beautiful. The catering hall was in this little town of Roslyn which looked like a setting for a christmas carole. The lake was frozen with a little foot bridge over it. The drive through the town was so picture perfect. Thankfully, the sun was shiny and the snow had stopped by then.

The gifts were amazing. I've been sorting through stuff since Sunday evening. Trying to eliminate some large boxes. I did receive lots of money and gift certificates. We're buying the items off the registry with them. I'm heading to BRU in the morning in fact.

I have to say I received to amazing gifts that completely surprised me. My cousin gave us a basket full of books that blew my mind. It was loaded with Dr. Seuss, Disney, all the classics, Sandra Boyton, plus books on NYC like Taxi Dog, etc... Seriously, it must be about $300 worth of books. On top of that, she gave me a pregnancy massage gift certificate! I was floored!

All in all, everyone had a wonderful time. We played lots of games and even had carolers stop in to sing during our meal. It was an amazing day!

Thanks all for asking!

Mare-
I can't believe how close you are to finally having your baby. I lost your phone number but I've been meaning to call you. Can you email it to be again. I can't believe your having a boy!!
I'm glad your shower went great. My shower was 4 days before I had Nathan so be thankful you didn't wait that long. There was alot of stuff I still needed to go buy after he was born. Not fun after a csection.
Best of luck to you but please send me your phone number again. I'd love to catch up with you.
Love-
