DS urine smells REALLY BAD! Not sure what it is....Any Docs. out there?

Help! I'm not sure what is going on with DS urine but it smells really bad! Please don't laugh but it smells like when you just start cooking pinto beans. (No he has not had any beans.) It has been like this for 3 days now and at first I thought it might be something we fed him, but not I'm not so sure. I was reading in one of my parenting books and it said that it might be a UTI. I hate to take him to his ped. and risk him getting sick before Christmas and we were just there last Friday. I feel like we live there. Anyway...Has anyone else had experience with this? I hate to put him through any unnecessary tests. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is asparagus. He has had it a few times before without having this reaction, but it is the only thing out of the blue that I can think of that could be causing this. HELP!

Oh goodness! I can practically guarantee its the asparagus! Sorry if this is way too much info, but asparagus ALWAYS makes my pee smell very oddly! In fact, when I was breastfeeding, I noticed it made my breastmilk smell that way too! It never seemed to bother DD, but it sort of freaked me out, so I stopped eating asparagus until I weaned.

So does asparagus not do this to everyone's pee?

How funny, I don't have the gene but DH does. I never knew that asparagus could do that. The first time I went into the bathroom after DH had used it after eating asparagus I though he had peed all over the bathroom. I couldn't believe the smell.

Josh always has bad smelling urine if he drinks too much juice, and not enough water to dilute the urine in his system. When he has been drinking enough water (sippy cups between meals only have water), then his diapers are scent-free. But cups of apple juice through out the day always make for ammonia smelling diapers!

Definitely the asparagus! It should be gone soon.

I'm happy for any advice doctor or not. I just didn't know that asparagus could do that. We were just wondering if it was a UTI and needed to take him in to the doctor. All your advice has convinced me that it is the asparagus. Who knew? The only thing is that he didn't do this before.

Tara - Sorry just saw your post...I'm a ped, as you might know. Yes, the smell can definitely be due to the asparagus. A UTI in a little one (baby), is usually associated with a fever, sometimes vomiting/not eating well, and can rarely cause pain when urinating. So, if the smell goes away in a about a day, and he doesn't have any of the other symptoms, I wouldn't worry about it. Please PM me if I can answer any more questions. Hope the smell goes away soon - Yikes! MY DD gets this too after asparagus, and it's just gross!

Thanks for the advice. He hasn't had a feaver or any of the other symptoms so hopefully it will just go away on its own. Our ped has tested him for this several times in the past and we just hated to put him through the painful process. Ouch! I think we will wait it out a few more days and see what happens. We'll see! Thanks!!!
