View Full Version : Do any of you cut your DS's hair?

Dylan's hair seems to grow very fast and DH likes it short. I'm not interested in buzzing it but would like to learn to cut it in the traditional little boy fashion. Does anyone know how? How did you learn? Any books you'd recommend?
Thanks,
Meredith

just watch a barber or hair stylist cut someone's hair. that is what i did. i just paid attention when my stylist cut my hair. you don't want to cut it across the bottom. you have to pull it away from the head and cut up instead of across, so that you don't create a bowl cut. i cut schuyler's hair all the time.

I cut DS's hair at least weekly. Like the above poster, hold it up to cut & cut vertically, not horizontally (if that makes sense).

Definitely follow Liza's advice. The first time I cut Audrey's bangs, I just cut straight across, and it looked TERRIBLE! (after that, I took her to a professional, btw!)

We decided to buy some clippers to see if Nick would be better about getting his hair cut ie without a meltdown in the barber shop! The Wahl clippers we bought had several different size attachments with numbers on them for the different desired hair lengths (I'm not into the buzz look, either). We knew what number attachment the barber used and did the same. I have to say, its alot easier than I thought it would be.

I assumed that DS's head would be too small for the clippers - should I try it anyway? I'm worried about the over-the-ears part in particular. Do you use the special ear attachment?
Thanks!

I use clippers and scissors for DH and DS's haircuts- and just bend down the tops of their ears while I clip around them. I've been doing DH's hair for almost 8 years, and DS#1's for 2 1/2, and it's never been a problem. Did you see this thread on cutting boys' hair?

I keep meaning to figure out the above ear attachments, but never seem to remember until it's time to do a haircut, and then there's no time to study up on the new attachments.
Edited to add: When DS#1 was younger, I used some clippers that were called "Peanut" clippers- they've got a shorter head than our full-sized clippers, and worked great until he was a little bigger. Now I just use the full-sized clippers on DH and DS#1. Not much longer, and I'll probably have to use the Peanuts again for DS#2!

Nick was about your son's age when we first took him to the barber and they used clippers then, so I don't see any problem with it. But, Nick does have a huge head, LOL!! Depending on how long it has been since we cut his hair last, we sometimes use the ear attachments and other times just the scissors. The ear attachment took a few times to get the hang of, but now we are pros!
