View Full Version : Shutterfly question re photos being cropped when uploaded

I just uploaded some photos to Shutterfly and noticed that the web site shows several of them cropped more than the original photograph (e.g. now part of a head cut off, where there was definite space above the head in the original). Any way to fix this?
TIA.

I don't think you can fix it.
It bugs me, too, especially since I tend to take pretty tight shots. I hunted around their site to find out why - this is in their FAQ's in the help section:
"Q: Why are pictures cropped?
A: The shape of your image (also known as the aspect ratio, or the ratio of width to height) is not always the same as the print size you want. Therefore, to make your image fit the paper size, some trimming has to occur. For example, images from a digital camera are more square than a 4ý6 print, so some of the ‘height’ of the picture must be trimmed when the image is printed."
I don't know why cameras are designed this way, but I have since learned to add more space at the tops of pictures. Maybe a different size print would give you better results?
HTH!

There is a fix photo section, and I can usually use the crop feature there to adjust the crop area. You can also resize them for different size prints. I also tend to edit at home with Photoshop Elements or Photoshop Album (for basic cropping), and then upload after I do that.

Thanks. I figured out when I went to crop the photos in Shutterfly that the whole image had been uploaded and just wasn't showing. I adjusted the crop dimensions for the print size I want and got the heads in. :)

Wow - I'm glad you posted this! I crop photos on their site all the time, but hadn't figured out that there was still that part at the top of the picture. I guess I always used cropping to make a pic smaller and never tried on one with the top cut off. Thanks!
