View Full Version : Broken dog teeth? (Update)

We just noticed Zoe has broken off her canine tooth. She's been acting clingy, and I went to check her gums and noticed that the big canine on one side has broken off. It's all the way to the gum on one side. Do they make doggie dentures? Poor Zoe! I have no idea when it happened. :(

Update: We just got back from dropping her off at the vet's. She's having it pulled in the morning. But she seemed to be feeling grand today and was excited to be at the vet's. (She lived there before we adopted her, so she's comfortable there.) I hope the surgery goes okay, but I love our vet, so all should be fine (except our credit card).

I'd get her to the vet in case they want to remove it, but she'll function just fine without one canine tooth. One of my dogs lost a canine when she was attacked by another dog (her canine caught on the dog's collar - my poor girl) and she did just fine! She has since died but I still have her tooth in my dresser drawer...

My most neurotic Weimaraner broke BOTH of his canine teeth trying to escape from the kennel when we boarded him one summer. One is fine broken, but the other exposed the nerve and needed to be pulled. He's just fine...no problems...and who can really tell unless you really look. In our case it goes with the mange he came with, his overbite, and miscut tail. Good thing we love him so much! :) Definitely get the pooch to the vet to make sure the nerve isn't exposed. If not, he'll be fine. Sorry for the loss!

That's so sweet, Lori. We have friends who have their dog's last collar framed on the wall. It's a pretty leather collar with the tags on it and it makes me tear up everytime I see it.

Thanks for the info. She has since been chewing on a bone (it was hidden under "her" chair) but is still acting mopey. I'm calling the vet first thing in the morning.

This didn't happen to our dog, but it did to my friend's dog. The dog had a root canal (can't remember why they didn't pull it), but he also ended up with a silver crown on the canine tooth! Pretty scary sight on a Rottie (although he was the SWEETEST dog I've ever seen)!!

One of our dogs had two really loose teeth from too much build-up and gingivitis. So wobbly they seemed like they were going to fall out. She ended up having to have 3 teeth pulled. But she still eats and chews bones as if nothing happened.

Hope Zoe is ok!

Not to jump in, but I thought someone might get a kick out of this mental picture. My poor cat has always had plaque problems. We get his teeth cleaned annually and they always have to pull one or two. Last year he lost one of his big canine's and now his mouth is often stuck open. Looks very funny on a cat. Open-mouthed with only one big front tooth :)

I would take Zoe to the vet though, because I know there are very sensitive nerves in that area and it can be painful.

I am glad she is going to be ok. How lucky for you that she is so comfortable at the vets. I am sure Zoe will be back to her normal self soon. Your credit card maybe not!
