View Full Version : Product Review: Snug Tuck Pillow

I have a few questions, Rachel or other users of this--
A mom here once recommended just putting a pool noodle under the fitted sheet and that it would do the same thing as the Snug Tuck. Do you think that is true?
How much use do you think you will get out of this product?
Does the Snug Tuck come with a pillow case, or is the fabric choice for the pillow itself?
If it didn't come with a pillow case, do you think one is neccessary?
On the website, it shows the snug tuck on top of the comforter- I know you said your daughter doesn't use a blanket- but if she did, would you use it on top of or under the blanket?
And lastly, I hesitate to mention this, but wasn't the owner of the Snug Tuck website kicked off Toddler Bargains? Do you think this is a safe person to do a transaction with?

LOL Julie--I remember her posts too. :P
I use a rolled up blanket UNDER the crib sheet after hearing that a pool noodle would work. I rolled my blanket REALLY tight and it works GREAT! If I'd put a couple rubber bands around it would probably work even better but I just reroll it every time I change the sheets. :D

I do think a pool noodle has the same basic effect, with a few differences. First, it's not nearly as thick. I know my daughter would roll over a pool noodle. Also, it's not as soft and wouldn't roll away at all when the child rolled against it, which I think is one of the benefits of the Snug Tuck. But it is a WHOLE lot cheaper.
As for how much use we'll get out of it, I'd say tons. Abigail would happily use it for the next year or two, but we also cosleep and are having another baby, so I can see using it with our new baby on through his or her toddlerhood, too.
The Snug Tuck comes with a pillowcase-- that's what you're choosing the color and fabric for.
Personally, I'd use the Snug Tuck under the blanket or comforter. I think it would be easier to get in and out of bed if it went under everything. A made bed would look nicer with it overtop, but for practicality's sake, I'd just use it underneath. But I think it's a personal choice.
As for the owner, I don't know anything about the circumstances on the toddler boards. You could email the Fields if you have concerns. I'm not worried about the business end of it, though. I am familiar with several cosleeping families who have bought the Snug Tuck, and everything has gone fine for them.

I also have some memory of someone posting rave reviews time after time of this product, not revealing that they were the owner. I don't remember whether it was on Toddler Bargains or BBB.

Thanks for a thorough review. My question is, is this product or a bed rail even necessary? How often do toddlers fall out of bed? And if the floor is not far away and well-padded, is it that big a deal?
I'm sure I didn't have a bed rail when I was little. There have been some genuine innovations in safety products in the last thirty years, like car seats, but there also seems to be a lot of overpriced stuff that plays to parenting hysteria. $50 for a shopping cart cover? $100 for a pillow? It just seems crazy to me.
One thing I like about the Fields' books is their commonsense approach to navigating the parent product landscape. I would appreciate their insight on whether or not this item can just be skipped.

One thing I like about the Fields' books is their commonsense approach to navigating the parent product landscape. I would appreciate their insight on whether or not this item can just be skipped.

Thanks for a thorough review. My question is, is this product or a bed rail even necessary? How often do toddlers fall out of bed? And if the floor is not far away and well-padded, is it that big a deal?
I'm sure I didn't have a bed rail when I was little. I may be wrong, but this sounds like a typical review of a product that the Field's have asked someone from the group to conduct. We see the announcements every once and a while from the Fields' regarding the testing of products. From all the emails the Fields receive, they choose someone to test a particular product. The Fields then mail the specified product to the chosen tester and in return the tester is required to put a product review on this board. Given all of that, if there was controversy earlier with this particular manufacturer I would think it is a moot point now!
IMHO I would think the Fields wanted this tested since so many parents still use bedrails. I would think they are trying to find an alternative to those and asked for this to be tested since many folks here (and on the Toddler Boards) use this product.
I personally have my daughter in a double bed and she hasn't fallen out yet! But I can certainly see the concern if a child is sleeping in a twin bed, or with cosleeping. I fell out of a twin bed when I was 12, breaking my wrist (I wasn't used to a "small" bed I had always slept in a double bed!) Sounds like I needed one of these :)

I fell out of a twin bed when I was 12, breaking my wrist (I wasn't used to a "small" bed I had always slept in a double bed!) Sounds like I needed one of these :)

We have the snug tuck and love it. I have a picture of our set up posted in the toddler section. Gillian is still using hers and it made transition from crib to bed much easier - especially since she was still using bumper pads in her crib. DH keeps commenting that we should take it off of her bed, since she doesn't move around a lot. He thinks it will make it safer for her to get in and out of bed on her own, but I'm not ready to remove it yet.
The fabric choice is the pillowcase and I don't think it requires one, however I believe that you can actually purchase extra cases for it. Since it's used about like a bumper pad, I don't see the need for an extra cover, but washing it would be quite a task.
We use ours on top of the blanket and I think it helps keep the pillow, the comforter, the blanket and the toddler in place better.
Yes, I remember the posts you are referring to. I believe she was not upfront about being the owner of snugtuck, but I'm not sure she ever denied that she was. I can vouch for her from a business perspective, however. I mistakenly ordered the pillow in the wrong size and she gave me the option of returning it or ordering the correct size at a discounted price with free shipping. Since it's such an awkward shape, I figured shipping would be pretty expensive, so we kept it and just took the discount on the correct size. I thought that was more than fair of her since it was totally my mistake. She was also very friendly and quite responsive to my emails.

I don't think its necessary, probably, but for really active crib sleepers, it might ease the transition. I remember my little sister was afraid of her twin bed, because she kept falling out onto the carpet. She wasn't hurt, but she thought the bed was trying to do her in! She slept on the floor for several months. A rail or pillow or pool noodle or blanket under the sheet might help in those situations. Also, some people choose high beds or have wood or tile floors, so falling out might be more concerning. Also, I think this is a great product for co-sleeping. I might get one when I have another baby, it would make those co-sleeping months much easier. I think I'd sleep much better.

Question! Gabe is getting ready to transition to a twin soon, so I'm definitely taking a close look at this product.
We like to travel a lot and this seems like a good solution for hotel beds (we're getting too cramped with my expanding belly and Gabe's tendency to kick!), so Gabe could have his own bed.
Would it be too bulky to pack a couple of these in our station wagon?

We like to travel a lot and this seems like a good solution for hotel beds (we're getting too cramped with my expanding belly and Gabe's tendency to kick!), so Gabe could have his own bed.
Would it be too bulky to pack a couple of these in our station wagon?

Yes, the Fields asked me to product test this. Of course you can live without it. However, it's one of those things that I'm finding myself really glad to have and I REALLY wish I had had it during our cosleeping days with my first baby. Likewise a shopping cart cover was really one of my most essential baby items for months and months. I think the fact that something didn't always exist doesn't automatically render it useless. I never had a carseat as a child, either, kwim? I do get the safety difference, but there are some products I'm just as glad someone invented, and this I think falls into that category. If we didn't cosleep, I don't think I'd foresee getting quite so much use out of it, but it's still a great product. I've got no affiliation-- just reviewing, as asked.

Well, when it was mailed to me, it was doubled over and folded into a bag. It's definitely not small, though, nor all that light. I wouldn't even contemplate air travel with it, for example. But if you're driving anyway and have an extra set of hands to lug stuff in and out of the hotel, it would work. It's not that practical for that purpose, though.

We have one at MIL's house. Drew is a very active sleeper and it helps keep him contained. And, more importantly for us, I think it makes him feel more secure. He sleeps on a toddler bed that has been converted from a crib. There are no rails, and it is about a 12' drop. He probably wouldn't get hurt, but it did surprise/scare him at first and he wouldn't get in the bed. Now, he really seems to enjoy being in the bed. It is a good solution for us as we just leave it there and do not travel with it. However, when he wakes up, he just pushes it off of the bed to get out. I'm hoping that means that he cannot push it off in his sleep. I need to look at it again, as we may not have it attached properly.
