This sort of follows from the "would you lie to your child?" thread from last week. Picture the scene: you and DH/DW or friend are talking about something non-child friendly. Little jugs have BIG ears from way across the room :) What do/will you say to your DD/DS when they come and stand in front of you and ask “what you talking about mommy?" After sputtering around I came up with a lame “I’m just talking to daddy…I can already see that that won’t work next time. How do/will you handle it?

My DD isn't even sitting up yet, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but how about replying in generalities and then distracting DC?
For example if you're talking about sex or who broke up with their bf/gf you could answer that you were talking about relationships and/or friendships. Then distract them by asking who they are friends with and what they think of their friendships. What do they like to do with their friends?
If you were talking about your coworker who got trashed at the company Christmas party you could reply that you were talking about parties and then ask DC if they like parties and what they like to do at parties, etc.
If you're talking about how much of an idiot DH can be becasue he hasn't cleaned the bathroom like he said he would for the third time you could say that you're talkinng about feelings and ask DC what they do when they get mad or sad. What makes them feel better?

Our biggest solution to this is simply to not discuss this stuff when the kids are in the room. OR we are very cryptic when we speak and if there is a question we say it's something you would not understand because you don't have mommy & daddy experiences (something to that effect). We are very conscious of not speaking of inappropriate things in front of them. Of course, we do goof once in a while.

Janey, I have no idea what I'd say. I guess I would lie. But anyway, I had to stop because I am chuckling here, picturing you saying, "What you talkin bout Willis." :P

"Mommy talk" is what I might say. At least that's what I used to tell my students (of course it was "teacher talk") if another teacher and I were talking at the playground during recess.
LOL! That is hysterical! I hope you catch DS saying it on videotape! ;-)

we just turn it into child-appropriate language, as pp said. like, "mommy felt upset about how dirty the bathroom is, so she asked daddy for help."
btw, i can't tell you how many times my child has said, "calm down, mommy" as he pet me on the shoulder... so i just say, "thanks for reminding me, schuyler, i will calm down."

Jamie, totally OT, but that card is adorable!!!
And more on topic, I LOVED that show! Hmm...I'm going to have to teach Kaya to say that now. :P
