I want to buy my OB and nice bottle or two of wine for Christmas.... rather than food stuff that will most likely be enjoyed by the whole staff! I don't drink wine and have no idea how to go about buying a nice wine that isn't too expensive! Anyone a wine drinker and have a favorite??? I am thinking maybe one red (either merlot or Cabernet Sav.) and one white?

Thanks for any advise you have to offer!

One good thing to do is ask the people at your local wine/liquor store. There are lots of affordable wines that are quite tasty. Some of our favorites are Rosemont Shiraz, Delicato (merlot, shiraz in particular), Carmen (merlot and shiraz in particular), Jacob's Creek shiraz or merlot. I cannot, for the life of me, think of the Chards we liked off the top of my head.

I agree with Andrea--go to your local wine store and ask for recs. Jacob's Creek is definitely a good winery, but there are others. It also depends on your price range. We could probably give you a list of pretty good wines in the 13-15 dollar range. :)

I like Reisling(white), and Syraz. You might try to go to a local wine store and explain what you are looking for, they should be able to show you a nice middle priced selection that will be pretty good.

I second asking at the liquor store (just go to one with a large wine selection and knowledgable help).

I try to give local wines as presents to support our farmers. Many of these are not widely distributed or known by the general public. This works especially well when I take these types of wines to other parts of the country where they aren't available. I have standing orders as hostess gifts for Holyfield and Le Bougouis which are some of our regional wineries.
