DH's company just bought another company there. He has been mulling over being transferred there (not right away, maybe in a year or two). We know nothing about Austin though. Can anyone tell me about it?

I want to hear the good and bad. Schools, real estate, climate, bugs (we have been to Houston and man do they have GIGANTIC bugs there!), shopping, etc. Anything you can tell us!

Thanks!

Surely someone knows more about Austin than I do, but I will say that I LOVE AUSTIN!!!! It's my favorite town- there are tons of great local places to eat (non-chains), good shopping, beautiful scenery, gorgeous lake (Lake Travis) and the 'burbs near there are good- at least the ones I can think of. There are several towns north of Austin (Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, etc.) that have great schools. The weather is humid and the traffic can be pretty bad, but I really love it there. Plus you are close to so many other fun places in other cities. I don't know where you're from or how Austin can compare, but I think Austin is a great place!

I am not sure where you would be coming from so I don't really know what you are comparing Austin to. It is the capital of Texas and home of the University of Texas. It is a very liberal town with a large mix of people. Everyone is very laid back. The weather tends to stay on the warmer side and can be humid. There are tons of great outdoor attractions and activities. You can find great food (Tex-Mex) and awesome live music. (Austin City Limits festival, South by Southwest music fest.) The town is growing rapidly so the real estate market is expensive and the traffic can be bad. There just isn't enough road for everyone. Like the previous post mentioned, the suburbs are growing to accomodate everyone. People regularly commute from Georgetown, Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Cedar Park. (These towns are all north of Austin. South Austin is also starting to grow as well.) I don't know if you would consider Austin to have great shopping. There are several malls and Round Rock now has some outlet stores that opened recently. Austin is about 1.5 hours north of San Antonio (the River Walk) and about 3.5 hours south of Dallas. I lived in Austin 1994 thru 1998 for college and my husband lived in Austin from 8 yrs old until graduating college in 1998 as well. His parents still live there and we visit regularly. HTH you some!
