So far I have tried the LJs and MOE inserts. What else is out there? I am feeling adventurous!
Beth mentioned the Costco microfiber towels (i guess the same material as the MOEs) but then I read it doesn't 'spread' the pee like hemp does. So do you do a microfiber towel and OVER that a hemp insert like a LJ?

I am just full of question today!! I really want to get this CD thing worked out. We are going through that bag of Luvs too fast for my liking!!

I also like JB inserts. They are very trim. The microfiber towels from Costco work well too but, are not as trim. The Costco towels (yellow) are larger and thicker than the BJ's, Walmart, Target, towels (blue and white). I like the Costco ones better but, they are bigger.

I recently got to see a Wonderfull insert (the ones made for the wonderoos) in person and was interested in those. The coverage of those seemed like it would be great and they would fit in a FB well. They are just a little spendy for an insert which is why I have not tried them yet.

Another option that I like are the Ella inserts. They fan out a little in the back for better coverage. (not straight like a JB) I had never considered using them in anything other than my Ella pocket until Jen (kensjen) suggested it. Great tip, Jen!

By the way Rashmi, I would be happy to send you a JB to try.

Becs,
Thanks girlie.. would you be willing to sell it to me? I am not good about returning things if I like them.. heeehee.

Ok, now totally daft question. Instead of using the microfiber(mb) towels.. why not just stuff with a Premium IPF? Are the mbs that much more absorbent?! Or is it that they are that much trimmer?

Have you tried a LJ girlie? They fan out at the back too.. make them a perfect fit for a BB pocket. Hey, I will trade you one LJ for one JB. :)

Hi Rashmi,

I have some wonder-fulls inserts & would be happy to send you one if you want to try them out. I use them in our wonderoos & like them, but our favorite insert for our wonderoos & FBs is an infant prefold, b/c it's not as bulky, and it seems to do the job just as well. I recently bought some microfiber towels from wal-mart & i have tried them only a couple of times - once in a FB stuffed w/just one mfiber towel - this leaked after about 5 min! - and once stuffed w/two mfiber towels - which leaked quickly, too. Not a big fan of them, so far & I'm afraid to keep experimenting w/them due to the leaks!!

I'd be happy to send you a microfiber towel, wonder-full, and infant prefold to try out if you would like. I know how fun it is to play w/new CD options. :) Also, I've got a friend who's looking to get rid of a ton of gently used infant prefolds, so if you're interested, LMK.

Best,
Jill

We use the Target microfiber towels mostly, but also have a couple komodo dragon doublers from LLL, one JB and a couple smaller unidentified hemp doublers. So far we like all of them fine, but the larger ones (LLL, JB) work best of course. I usually wrap the microfiber towel around the hemp insert.

I'm looking forward to trying some lizajanes sometime soon- though I've been spending a bit of cash in the diaper world lately, and should slow down a bit! ;)

Hey Jill,
I would love to try a wonder-full.. thanks so much for offering.... i have a TON of prefolds (infant and regular).. i might try them at night and see how it goes too. I really need to come up with a game-plan of what I am going try and what I like best.. things get so confusing after a while!

I was just thinking the other day, when so many people were having issues with their BabyBlankets leaking when stuffed with microfiber towels, or sometimes JoeyBunz. I have never had a leak when stuffed with only 1 MOE insert, and wondered why.

Then I was doing the laundry, and laid out all my inserts, and realized that the MOE (microfiber) inserts are a good 2" wider all the way around than a microfiber towel or JoeyBunz! Thats a huge difference! The stride (pocket) in both a BabyBlanket and Happy Heiny are much wider than a FuzziBunz, and need a wide larger insert. The MOE inserts completely fill that area so the pee doesn't leak around the insert the way it would with a narrow insert.

Also, I did a test with water, and 1 microfiber towel did NOT soak up nearly as much liquid as a MOE insert (definetly not as much as a super-trim JoeyBUnz either--which I LOVE in my FuzziBunz btw...)

Note: I do NOT work for MOE (like I have the time! ;)), nor did I get paid for this advertisement--if I did, the money would have been blown on more diapers by now! hee-hee :)).

Amy! You are so meticulous in your research! Bravo!
Good to hear that the MOEs hold more pee than a microfiber towel.. i suppose they are trimmer also?
The only time we had a leak was when dh used one Infant Prefold and one LJ/MOE.. i think there was just too much pee and so it leaked.
Maybe I should try a Happy Heiny too.. heehee.

For me, the inserts all worked basically alike. I needed two of anything to hold up to DD's daytime pees. I have used:

MOE inserts (they are definitely wider and longer like Amy pointed out)
WalMart microfiber towels
Costco microfiber towels (these are VERY big, maybe bigger than a MOE?)
Joeybunz

I didn't like using 2 Joeys (even though that was very trim) since I think that Joeys make the diaper very stiff. My favorite combo was a Joey and a microfiber insert. I never had the pee wicking issue that people mention now.

ETA: And you're welcome to borrow anything I have to try Rashmi.

Rasmi, my favorite stuffing of choice these days seems to be a microfiber towel trifolded inside of a trifolded infant prefold. It seems to give the best combo of trimness vs. absorbency. I also like the LJs, but they're usually overkill for the day and not quite as "squishy" as the mftowel/PF combo. Plus, since I was able to pick up a bunch of microfiber towels from Walmart for cheap and I have a bunh of infant PFs, this means I have a ton of inserts. You're welcome to have a pair if you'd like. :)

I did try stuffing with a premium IPF/CPF and it just made the whole thing superbulky. Yes it works, but sometimes the overstuffing causes the legs to gap. So mf towels with infant PF ends up working better.

I am a big fan of wrapping a microfiber towel (mine are from Sam's) in a LJ for nighttime or an MOE for day (Ryan has upped his fluid intake lately so we *need* this extra oomph). Just the microfiber towels folded is okay but not super absorbant.

I have some random hemp inserts but they are not worthy enough to stand on their own. I like Joey's but don't love them! I also have 2 Duckybuns that I got from Ms. Research Amy but I don't feel the love for those like I feel for my LJ's. :)

I just ordered some more LJ's for our FB so I need to go out and get some more microfiber towels now.

Ms. Research Amy says that MOE inserts and microfiber towels are equally trim ;)

These folks did a really scientificky sounding test of different inserts, and found that MOE inserts are twice as absorbent as a JB of the same size rating.

http://www.nurturedfamily.com/detail.aspx?ID=41#ldfbinserttypes

I have JBs, a hemp fleece shaped like a JB from LJ and MOEs of different sizes. The MOEs are always more absorbent. They win out always because they last longer and hold more, and seem to suck up the pee faster, preventing leaks. I also do not work for MOE!

JBs are nice because they are indeed trim, but they will not last as long as a MOE.

I like having the flexibility to not have to worry about changing diapers for 2-3 hours (as opposed to religiously changing every 2 hrs on the dot).

I concur. And I also agree that one MOE is probably a little more absorbant than 1 towel. However, one MOE plus one infant PF seems a bit more bulky than one towel plus one infant PF.

I love the LJs for night, we can use one, sometimes wrapped in a Walmart towel (thanks Debbie for that tip), in a M FB. I have the BB LJs, which seem to fit the FBs fine.

I do feel the Duckybunz love, I have two and love them

I have various M and L JBs, which work fine.

Oh, and Rashmi, I think Splenda is crack, too, if it is in the form of tasty, tasty C2 (low sugar Coke)

>>However, one MOE plus one infant PF seems a bit more bulky than one towel plus one infant PF.

How come?!! I thought the MOE or the microfiber were equally trim?

mudder17

Well, for some reason a trifolded MF towel seems squisher. The MOE is pretty squishy, but I think it's not quite as squishy as the MF towel. Maybe because the MOE layers are sewn together, whereas the towel layers are loose?

ETA: I think it's also because I can trifold the towel so that it's not as wide as the MOE so it seems to fit inside the infant PF better.

I did a much less-scientific test of the inserts I own. I folded each into thirds so it was manageable and then slowly poured water onto it until I got a drip. Like I said, not so scientific. I've meant to devise a better test, but haven't. I also meant to test infant PFs, but haven't. Here are my results:

JoeyBunz (med.) = 5 oz (same as your site)
Microfiber towel from Target = 9 oz
LizaJane = 11 oz.

I find it interesting that I got the same answer as your site on the JoeyBunz.

We are JB users here. We use two in the diaper most of the time, day and night but only because we are lazy and ds can go longer with two. I don't find JB's to be stiff at all but I can see how people think that when comparing to MOE.

My current favorite stuffing for a FB is a LLL Froggy Fleecer PF folded, widthwise, into fourths.

I have also used JB's, and still do on occasion. I find that I need two, sometimes three at night, and that makes for a bulky diaper. For some reason, the LLL folded seems to be much trimmmer. I don't like the feel of the microfiber towels, although they did seem to be okay for daytime. I find them too static-y and wierd feeling for my liking. I haven't tried Liza Jane's inserts or the MOE micro inserts b/c we are supposed to be potty training and DH has politely asked me not buy any more diapers ;).
