View Full Version : Making sure my stash is OK

Hello there, I have recieved so much feedback and advice from you ladies on this board already, but I thought I would ask a couple of questions:
I am due at the end of June and need to make sure I have what I need for CD:
My current stash:
36 infant IPF
11 Kissaluv 0
2 Sugarpeas Small
6 Fuzzibunz Medium
1 Bummis XLarge Tote
36 wipes from darling diapers
2 NB Proraps
4 NB Bummis Supersnaps
4 Small Proraps
7 small Bummis Supersnaps
I know that I am set for Newbie CD, but just curious what I need for the next stage, or is it just easier to get that when the time comes? Is there anything I should add to make the job easier for us?
Where can I get the best travel wetbag?
Do most of you just use a trashcan as a diaper pail?
Do I need something easier for travel? are there any AIO that are good for newbies? I know I have to fly in august and September for week trips and dont want to have to switch to sposies for the time I am gone. Any suggestions?
Sorry this is so long and I am so needy, just new and trying to figure things out! Thanks in advance!

Hmm...okay for the newborn stage, you definitely look set, unless your babe is really small, in which case some preemie PFs would be useful. My babe was 7 pounds even, and although I MIGHT have been able to start with the infants, I was glad to have the preemies around. It was money well spent, too, since I ended up using the preemies as doublers for at least 5 months after I started the infants.
I didn't really plan that far ahead to the next stage, and I'm glad I didn't because I probably would have bought things I wouldn't have ended up using. As it is, I have already done that! Some people were able to use pockets at night in the early stages, once their babe started sleeping longer, but with most of them, their babes didn't poop at night as much, so they didn't have to worry about leaks. IME, pockets and AIOs are not great for holding in NB, BF'd poop, so I didn't really use them until DD started solids. I just could never predict her poop pattern very well--I don't think she had one! So I ended up with leaks around the legs and onto her clothes a couple times before I gave up on pockets and AIOs before solids.
For a travel wetbag, I used ziploc bags, initially, but I do have a bummis (nylon) and a Snap-EZ (PUL) wet bags that I now store in my diaper bag. Both are pretty handy. For my two diaper pails, I use mostly Snap-EZ liners, although I also have one Bummis liner. I actually prefer the SEZ liners, but that's because I had her make it to fit my specifications. Most people here do just use a Sterlite Trash Can (Target) with a wetbag or just the wetbag on the doorknob. I got my Dekor's before I knew better, but I'm actually glad I have them. The doorknob is too far away from my toilet and I like being able to toss the diapers in without having to undo the wetbag. I assume having a sterlite trash can would be the same thing.
I've flown/traveled with CDs with no problems. Let's see...your babe will be 2-3 months at that point? I think I first traveled when DD was 2 months so she was exclusively in PFs and covers at that time...she may have had a few kissaluvs, but I don't remember exactly when she outgrew them. In any case, she wasn't too squirmy, so changing her into prefolds wasn't as big a deal as you might imagine. The main thing is that you want to use covers with gussets so that you're less likely to get that leaky poop onto clothing. I've been told that the nylon pull-on pants will do the same thing. I suppose if you want something easier, you could go for fitteds with a cover, but it's still 2 steps. Again, some people have used AIOs or pockets successfully in the earlier stages, but I'm not one of them, so no help here.
My suggestion is that you try out your current stash and as you get the hang of it, you may decide that it's easy enough to just use what you have on your trips, or you may want to try something new after the baby comes and you get a better idea of size, shape, etc. And if worse comes to worse, you COULD always use sposies, although I definitely understand your reluctance to do so, since I haven't used sposies since the hospital/delivery.
Anyway, good luck and let us know if you have any more questions!

Eileen's answer was great. The only thing I want to add is consider getting a 2nd liner for your pail. I started with only 1 and it was a pain. I wash it each time and it's so much easier to have 2 to switch out.

It looks like you have a great stash. I would wait until your baby is born to buy for the next stage. You really won't know what you like untill you've used it. I wish I had done this, because I got stuck with some covers I never used. My DS was allergic to PUL, and there's no way I could have known that until I tried it on him.
The fitteds should be fine for travel. I wouldn't use AIOs on a newborn, because their poo is runny, so it's nice to have a cover to catch any poo that leaks out of the diaper. Travelinng with cloth is really easy. I always use prefolds and fitteds when flying, and just pack a couple extra in case of a flight delay. I even used cloth on a 5 week trip to China, and hand washed the dipes. It was much easier than it sounded, and I'm glad I didn't use disposables for the trip. If you want some cute AIOs to show off, you might try Angelwraps QD AIOs. These work great as covers over prefolds as well, and are very cute. I bought a cow AIO, and it was one of my favorites. I still put it on DS even though he's in training pants. He moos whenever he sees it.
A lot of us use the Sterilite gargabe cans from Target. They work great with a pail liner, and they're really cheap.
I'm guessing some other moms will have good travel wetbag recommendations. I bought two from Happy Tushies that were really cute, but I'm guessing there are more WAHMs making these now.

Yep, you look pretty much set! I have a flip-top trash can from Target, its their home brand, but identical to the Sterlites. They are rectangular, with a lid with a spring catch. I agree you need another pail liner! Another bummi's would work fine. I have a small Bummi's tote for a wetbag, but I also have one from Ann at tykies www.tykiediapers.com . She makes them custom, and they are very cute! I also have a big pail-liner sized zippered wetbag from Happy Tushies. I got mine at www.diaperware.com . I use that when traveling, since the zipper is more secure, when you are hauling a bag of dirty diapers around in the car, in checked luggage, etc.

You all are great thank you! I realize that all I need are two wet bags for going out, another diaper pail liner and a diaper pail! I will wait it out and see what I need for the future when the time comes. I think that I have 1 dozen too many IPF so I am going to see if I can exchange them for reg. size ones. Thank you for all your advice it is great!
Now on to the search for a great wet bag that zips.... and maybe two different sizes for different length trips!
