I don't CD so I don't know all the abbreviations....can someone help me out? From what I can gather from old threads, I think I need something that is PUL--what is that?! And another question, I am allergic to wool so will this be a problem? And what is an AIO? I'm sure I'll have more questions, so please just hang in there with me!
eta: I thought of another question already..hee hee..do any of you do mama cloth part time? I'm thinking about when I need to go out for the day or out of town...how does that all work. I know I sound like an idiot, but I don't have a clue about this stuff. ;)
TIA,
Angela

AIO stands for All-in-one, and basically it's a diaper (or pad) that becomes one piece that you put on. It has an absorbent layer, a water proof layer, and sometimes a stay-dry layer. The name is kind of deceptive, though, because a fair number of AIOs are put together from various pieces (at least 2 usually) ahead of time (like right after the laundry). You'll probably need PUL (polyurethane laminate) if you're allergic to wool. But I think some pads are fleece and depending on your flow (but I think yours is currently pretty heavy?), you may not need the PUL. The PUL is basically a waterproof layer.

The simplest pads are all in one piece - an AIO - they look just like the paper ones, even down to the wings. PUL is a waterproof layer that will form the back of the pad. Fleece and wool are other options for the waterproof layer. You definitely don't have to do wool. But, in a pad with wings, the wool will probably not touch your skin. All my pads are backed with fleece, with only one with wool. I don't like PUL, because it doesn't breathe.
My favorite pads are Daisygirldesigns

These are one-piece. Only problem is that she doesn't do PUL. But I've had no problems with the fleece, even on very bad days (though you probably have a heavier flow).
I think Shandelle will do PUL pads. Might be worth emailing her. Though she is cutting back on how much sewing she's doing right now.
One thing I'd suggest is all hemp for the soaker material - as it is the most absorbent.
Not sure if that helps at all! :)

You should also check the instock store for mom and me creations. SHe's been keeping a small stock of mamacloth at her store and they are great. SHe uses a material similar to PUL, or you can sometime get wool through her too.
As for "part time", I haven't bothered. I generally use the Divacup so cloth is for nights and backup, or light days but for post partum I used all cloth and never had an issue. Just keep a ziploc baggie (or buy a pretty mamacloth waterproof bag) to toss dirties into and rinse at home. If out of town, I just rinse till they're mainly clean or even hand wash. No biggie at all :)

Have you thought about trying the Diva Cup? I can't rave about it enough - between that and my back-up organic disposable liners, I'm 100% covered 100% of the time...
And the best part is that the $25 (or close to it) Diva Cup will last 10 years...I think it's my favorite purchase ever :)

Ditto what Petra said. Yes, it took me a few tries to get the hang of it, but now I LOVE that I don't have to worry about leaks, even on my heaviest of days. And I can go swimming and not worry. And I HATED tampons--they were uncomfortable, gross, and I was always worried that I would leave them in too long, resulting in TSS. I never felt "secure" when I used it; part of the reason why the final half of a single box from 2 years ago recently became a baby toy! :P
And for some reason, handling tampons really did seem gross to me, but I don't have the same problem with the Diva cup. Go figure, huh?
