Okay, I know this may seem silly, but I am trying to buy a few larger size covers ahead of time for the baby. But I am having a hard time figuring out/estimating what size she will be in the future. This is mainly because Joshua was always such a big boy for his age (usually off the charts for both height and weight...weight especially ;)). So I don't have a true frame of reference for an average sized little girl.

I want to buy a couple Stacinator stretch wool covers for the summer, when she will be 3-6 months old. I plan on her wearing a Sugarpeas size #1 underneath. These run a little roomy anyway don't they?

The sizes are:
Small 10-15 lbs.
Medium 15-20 lbs.

Joshua was born only 7.3 lbs. but by the time he was 3 months old, he already weighed 15 lbs! By the time he was 6 months old, he was 21 lbs. So I felt like I should buy a medium size for her...but then I realized that maybe most baby girls aren't that big for their age? Would a size small be better

What size do you think is best? I am only buying ahead because the "pretty colors" I want are sooo hard to find and I'm sure they'll be gone by then.
Oh! And am I totally insane to be buying wool covers for a young (hopefully breastfed) baby? I just want her to be cool and comfortable in the heat.

They run huge, Amy, I'd get the small. Forrest is a chunky boy, and the larges are really still too big at 30lbs.

Okay, Kaya was 7 pounds at birth, 14 pounds at 4 months and 18.5 pounds at 1 year. At 22 months, she's still only around 23+ pounds. Does that make her average or small? Right now she can fit a large, but I have to admit, it is roomy. The mediums would be much better. For an average 3-6 month old, I would say small for the day and medium for the night. However, it definitely does depend on the baby. The twins in our church (girl and boy) have been on a major growth spurt forever, it seems. They were just over 6 pounds at birth, but it seems like they have been competing ever since then. Even though they're 9 weeks younger than Kaya, they surpassed her in weight by around 4 months and at 20 months, they're probably close to 30 pounds, and maybe 3-4 inches taller. The girl is bigger than her brother. But they both love food, especially the girl, and they seem to eat very large meals.

I think I was using an aristocrat at night at around 4 months, but she wasn't pooping as much by then. I had to switch over to wool at around that time because PUL was making her break out in rashes and I didn't realize that nylon could be cool and comfortable. If you think it might be too much of a pain to clean the occasional poopy wool cover, you could do fleece and nylon covers. One thing you could consider is the stretch wool cover from Angeldry. They also run on the larger size (you'd want a small, I suspect), but I've successfully tossed them in the wash a few times (yes, even now, we occasionally get poop on the cover) with no problems. I just wash on warm or cold (whatever I'm washing baby clothes with) in the washer, spray with lanolin, and let it hang to dry. And IMO, these covers are so much nicer than the Staccinator for heavy wetters. For a 3-6 month old, I would say small for the day and medium for the night.

HTH!

Thanks ladies, keep the opinions coming! :)

I actually found 2 small covers in the colors I wanted last night, so I bought them. I figured I could return them if you gals said I should go with mediums...which are much easier to get ahold of. But now I think I'm glad I got the smalls.

ETA: I've got to be completely insane. I just ordered 2 mediums to put away just in case. Look for some covers up for sale in a few months when I figure out what does and doesn't fit! :)
