I know different doctors give different advice, but my SIL's ped had her start solids at 3 months and WHOLE MILK at 6 months! Is this at all normal? My nephews are just fine in the weight category but sick all the time. (constant runny noses) They are now 2 and 4. Could this still be affecting them? Maybe I'm wrong, but I had never heard of such a thing.

I am aiming for solids at 6 months and breastmilk as long as possible. This is what my ped recommended and what I thought others would too.

Just out of curiosity - do you know how old their ped is? Sounds like his/her advice is "old school," similar to what some of our parents tell us. Nevertheless, the ped's advice is WAY out of line with the AAP's guidelines.

WOW, yes they are WRONG. I hope she changes pedis right away.

I don't know his age, but I do believe he might be a bit older. When my SIL started solids with her first, this doctor suggested making a big batch of vanilla pudding! (Pudding at 3 months?!)

Funny thing is SIL LOVES this ped and even said it would be great if I could take Lauren to him. If they have another baby, I'll talk to her about some of his suggestions.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?!!!!!! Not only is it not normal, it's totally in opposition to the recs of his own medical group, and it's really potentially harmful to those poor babies! Yikes.

Lets hope he's not offering carseat advice and I wonder if he's aware of the whole "Back to Sleep" campaign too!

One of my co-workers peds said the same thing! He's totally old school (and old, might I add), and he had her start solids at 3 months (including egg whites) and whole milk at 7 months. I almost died.

LOL, he's probably not offering carseat advice b/c he doesn't know that such a thing exists!

Unbelievable! I didn't know some pedistricians were still giving advice like that. I hope she changes peds.

My ped. told me to start solids now (at 5 months) because my daughter is a bit of a slow gainer and the solids would fill her up and help her get back to sleeping through the night.

Does this sound a little off? I thought solids were for practice at first.

This guy has been a ped. forever so I'm wondering if he's just out of touch with new advice.

It sounds very off. Breastmilk has more calories than solid food, so a baby who is slow to gain should be held off of solids so they eat more breastmilk (or formula).

Well it depends on the situation. Generally as someone else mentioned breastmilk has more calories than cereal/solids. However my DS never really like taking bottles of EBM at daycare. so we started cereal a little early at 5 1/2 months so he got some nutrition at daycare. He never had a problem taking solids at daycare. If she will take solids in addition to BM than it's fine. I would definately not cutback on the amout of BM she is getting.

Definately do what you're doing...I think that's way too early! It definately sounds old school!
