I liked the Playtex First Sipsters (we had ones with 2 handles, not sure if you can find ones with handles anymore though) and The First Years Take and Toss cups. The Take and Toss have some that are really small now that are good for younger babies.

I use a first years sippy cup (Purple with a greenish top--not the take and toss) with DS. It is a lid and cup, no fancy small pieces to loose. DS took right to it. I put in some water and let him play with it, at first held him and helped, but now just lean him back in the highchair and he serves himself. Haven't tried formula or bm yet. I always use the sippy during solids and when we go out in the heat.

I usually gave DS just water in the sippy cups, though I tried formula once in a while. It is probably a good idea to give some formula in a sippy, though, to get her used to it, so you can switch away from bottles after a year old. Since DS never really drank formula out of a sippy he still really doesn't drink milk out of a sippy. I would say the main mode she should get formula should still be bottles though until a year old.

I skipped the sippy cup and went straight to a straw cup. I think that starting the straw at 6 months made it easier for her to learn to drink from it, because the sucking instinct is still in place.
I like the pop up straw cups because they don't spill no matter what.

I love the Avent sippy cup attachment that you can use with the avent bottles. It is very soft. My DS never would take anything from a bottle, but was using this well by 5 1/2 months.

I have the Quickstraw Straw Bottle from Playtex

I got a smaller sippy cup from Playtex and put the straw lid on it, so she can handle it better. I bought a refill set of straws at WalMart and it came with a shorter straw that fit the sippy cup perfectly.

What is the recommended age to start with a sippy cup? DD is almost 8 months and we haven't really tried.
Any thoughts?

Here's a website with some different choices and reviews--aimed at kids with cleft palate issues but I think it does a good job at explaining how the cups work and why you might want one over another.

I have a sippy obsession :), so of the ones listed I can personally recommend the Rubbermaid straw sipper or the Nuby soft spout but didn't like the Playtex drink up cup at all. The In-Zone Kids sports bottle is great for my 2 yr old's water but would be way beyond a 6 mo old I think.
I'd maybe try the Nuby--I just bought one on a whim while looking for a sports bottle but the silicone spout makes it seem more like a baby bottle than I expected. My daughter calls herself Baby when she drinks water from it so it would probably be a good first sippy!
