Hi there.
I am convinced by all the great advice on this message board to use the drop-in system by playtex. Now I am curious about how many 4oz liners I will need. When do babies begin to drink more that 4oz. at a feeding? How many liners should i get? I really don't even know how many times a day a baby eats.
Also, I know in my travels about the www i saw a much less expensive storebrand, like walgreens (btw, it wasn't them).
Thanks for your help.

I've seen generic drop-ins at both Wal-Mart (parent's choice brand) and at Target.

DS was BF'ed and drank EBM at daycare. He never really drank more than 5oz at a time, and I *think* you can get 5oz into the 4 oz liners. I got Target brand, they were the exact same thing, just a couple dollars cheaper per box.

DS is BF'd still and takes EBM bottles to daycare. He's also never taken more than 5 oz at a time and I can definitely squeeze 5 oz into the 4 oz sleeve. I do have to use the Premium Playtex drop-in bottles versus the regular because the regular ones leak on me quite often. Must be the fact that I'm stuffing 5 oz into them. So, I ended up replacing all my regular bottles with the premium nursers and no more leaks.

In case people are interested I found the liners today at BJ's. They are the bj brand (berkeley and jensen) 200 liners for $9.99. That's just 5 cents per feeding. playtex run 9cents/feeding. store brands are a little bit less at about 7cents/feeding. the bj's are the cheapest that i have seen.
could i just use the 8oz. from the start and fill them less?
thanks again,
neeley

You betcha! I bought a set of premium nursers, and it had mostly 8 oz bottles, so even though DS was taking only 5 or so oz per feeding, it was usually out of 8 oz drop ins.

I really liked the walmart brand drop-ins (1.99 for 100 I think) even better than the Playtex. Newborns tend to eat every 2-3 hours. I only need 4 oz bottles b/c DS was Bfing, but it depends on your baby. If your exclusively formula feeding, I'd say not to buy too many small bottles, b/c you'll be moving up to 8 oz soon enough.

I got Playtex drop-in liners at CVS last week. Buy 1, get the next one 50% off.

Just as an add on, if you are going to FF exclusively or extensively, I recommend getting the 8oz Playtex Premium Nursers instead of the 4oz bottles. You can use either liner with the bigger bottle. I bought a pack of three and have been using those three bottles exclusively since DD was 4 months. Those disposable liners make it so easy to get away with only a couple of bottles!

we are planning to ff exclusively and with solid food until milk at 1 year. how many nipples would you recommend? slow or fast? can babies ever start right out with the fast?
may help to know that my husband and i are both back to work at 8 weeks. i am assuming that this means a few more nips than the average.
thanks, neeley

It depends on the baby, but I wouldn't start with the fast nipples, newborns can only take so much at once. We never go the fast, but that's b/c we used it for very occasional supplement, so we didn't want him to get used to the fast flow and prefer it. So, I don't know when to actually switch to fast nipples. Given that you will be doing that eventually, maybe you don't want to buy a ton of slow nipples.

Hi Neeley,
We use the dropins for our DD who is almost 8 months old. You can use the bigger bottles and liners from the start, but I found it difficult to squeeze the air out of the liners when using the large bottles, so we used the 4 oz. bottles and liners until she started drinking 5 oz. I would also definitely start out with the slow nipples, we have found the fast flow to be very Fast, and only started using them at about 6 months, as she seemed to choke a little when using them previously.
Since we had bought both bottle sizes, we had more nipples/rings/caps than the size bottle we were using at the time, which I found convenient. That way, if you hadn't kept up with the dishes (which seemed to happen here a lot!) we could just use a new liner, and one of the extra nipples and rings.
We mainly use the Playtex brand, but I have used Target brand as well, and not had any problems with them. If you get the Playtex on sale, they are about the same price. I would not get the regular liners (non-formed ones) we did once by accident and they were a pain!!
Hope this helps a little, and I am happy to answer more questions if you have them! These bottles have worked well for us, and we are very happy with them. :)

You will most likely want to start with slow! Even with slow my DS was leaky when he ate!!! He wore a bib with a plastic backing and we often put a burp cloth/cloth diaper under his chin so he didn't end up wet. Sometimes we wondered how much milk actually got into his tummy???!!! He didn't move to fast flow till he was closer to a year!
