Can't get avatar to work

Hi, I'm fairly new to the board and love how you guys add pictures and timelines to your messages. I went to the Newbies post to see how to do it but can't get my avatar to work. I follow the directions given but everytime I go to update my user profile it tells me "invalid avatar." My image is smaller than the 48 X 48 required and is less than 50 K so why won't it work?
Can someone enlighten me? I am, believe it or not, fairly computer literate so this is really frustrating me.

Hi! I see you uploaded a picture to the server, so that's the first step. Are you using this URL for the avatar image? (Start with http://www.)

If you still can't get it to work, maybe it's a browser issue of some sort. I'll be happy to try it for you, but I'd need your password - so it's up to you whether you want to do that. If so, just email me through the boards. You might want to also attach your original image.
