I just heard this from a friend....haven't done any searches yet, but since I know there are a lot of moms here who home-school I thought I'd ask if any of you have heard anything?

What my friend said is that home schooling is no longer permitted (in California) unless the parent has a teaching credential.

So...anyone know if there's any truth to this?

If it is true this is the wackiest time for such a change - CA is cutting the education budget by 10% - they literally won't have the teachers to handle all the home-schooled kiddos.

ETA: I just found this: http://californiahomeschool.net/howTo/updates.htm - Seems there was a ruling in a court case that found home schooling was not legal:

"Parents who fail to [comply with school enrollment laws] may be subject to a criminal complaint against them, found guilty of an infraction, and subject to imposition of fines or an order to complete a parent education and counseling program," wrote Justice H. Walter Croskey whose opinion was joined by the other two members of the appellate panel.
But this is just one case and the law itself has not changed.

I'm not up to date specifically on this, but IMO it is highly unlikely there will ever be a real HSing ban in any state. HSers across the spectrum are a pretty powerful group. We plan to HS in NC and I'm not a conservative Christian, but there are a lot of CC homeschoolers that would freak on their representatives if there was even a mention of a ban. That constituency has a lot of influence.

California is already a hard state to homeschool in and this latest ruling is really raising the hackles of homeschoolers across the country.

I haven't heard anything like that, and I know a lot of homeschooling parents. Maybe you can look up homeschooling networks in CA and inquire.

In some states you have to submit a form saying you agree to teach X number of hours in certain subjects.

In some states you either have to check in with a supervising teacher a few times a year, give your child a standardized test or submit a portfolio.

In California, you have to have your homeschool declared a private school, hire a private tutor or be 'umbrella-ed' under a private or public school (often using their curriculum. Basically, the government wants more control over who's teaching and what they're teaching.
