View Full Version : Teaching a 2yo to pee in the woods?

Seriously. What do you do with a 2.5yo who has decided she is potty trained but is physically too little to squat and not pee all over herself? We do a lot of hiking and I need to find a solution to this dilemma. Anyone here hike a lot?

Well, TMI here. Sometimes its all in how you are "built". I point "forward" and when I sit down to pee, I have to lean forward to get the pee to go down. I have noticed that Sarah is similarly constructed LOL! I can't tell you how inconvenient this has been when hiking, traveling in places with hole in the ground type toilets, etc.
When hiking, the easist thing for an adult is to find a log and sort of use it like a toilet seat and hover over it so that the log blocks the forward direction of the pee. Maybe you could do something similar with her? A really small log? :ROTFLMAO:

I take off the shorts/pants and/or let her hike in wet pants!! It really doesn't seem to bother her-probably because she is already wet from the giant mud puddle.

I used to pick up my daughter with one of my arms around her shoulder area and one under her knees, as if I was going to rock her to sleep (but a little more sitting up). Her bottom would end up hanging down. I would bend/squat down, hold her away from my body and tell her when it was OK to go ahead. I'd then set her back down away from the wet spot and wipe her, fix her pants, etc. My arms made a little seat for her. hth! :)

I've seen this done in an urban setting (!) maybe it could translate to the woods? You hold DD under her arms, she braces her feet against a vertical surface in front of her (a tree, maybe?) and pees.
I've made less of a mess myself when I find a fairly steep hill and squat deeply, facing uphill. Gravity and all, KWIM? But don't know whether this would work for a little one, it's kind of disconcerting to squat on an incline.

I can't convince my 4 year old boy to pee anywhere but a toilet. It is a no go. He just refuses. So whatever people do to get kids to pee out of doors, please let me know.

Before DS learned to pee from a standing position, I would grab his lower legs, spread them and squat myself. Hope you get the picture.
Now I am not sure how we would deal with peeing if we were to go hiking as recently DS decided he can't pee on any live things, including grass :rolleye0014: as it might get 'burned'. And I started it...

You have DH standing beside DS and DH is also peeing to show DS how to do it, while you are squatting beside DS and are hepling him to aim so that he misses his pants/shoes. Yes, what a sight that must have been to any bystander - not that anyone was there. I think this summer, DH may have to give DS some more lessons outside in the backyard, so my help is no longer needed.

DS did quite a bit of potty learning by going outside. We were camping/hiking and he saw DH do it (TMI!) and that started the fascination. For a while he would occasionally do it off of our back deck, which I eventually had to put a stop to LOL!
Once they start, sometimes they don't want to be stopped, so be forewarned ;)

How about a potette? http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=6087&parentCategoryId=85180&categoryId=117215&subCategoryId=86184 You don't have to bring the plastic bags, you could just set it on some grass...? (I took one travelling when I was ECing my baby and it's *really* light and tiny, but sturdy...I'll put it in the car for when she's potty learning).
Me? I just learned to pee standing up like my brothers did :boogie: (I'm quite sure I was not the best smelling little girl on the mountain, however...dribbles down my legs and no TP lol....)

:yeahthat: Except in our case I am not helping DS, I felt I could trust DH with this one ;), and DS has his pants somewhere around his feet. Don't know if it has anything to do with ECing but my DS would pee anywhere, including a cup (for medical tests and not, don't ask).

How do you get boys NOT to pee outside??? Mine pees off the deck, the back yard, the park, off the neighbors swing set in the middle of a birthday party  you get the picture. We have really had to drill into him that he has to ask us before he pees anywhere except the back yard. And yes, for some reason, the pants always have to be around his ankles. So even whe he could discreetly do it, there is no discretion. And he is getting too old for this. And I am the one who taught/encouraged this skill.

I was going to suggest the same On The Go potty that Julie mentioned is carried by One Step Ahead.
BRU also carries it (at least the one by me does) so you could avoid shipping costs.
Good luck!

We hike a lot. I face DD and get her pants down. Then I have her squat and hold her feet as close to me and her bottom as far from me as I can. It actually works best when her bottom is downhill, or she hanging off a log. It's kind of hard to explain! But it works for us and she never pees on her shoes. She's 4 and I still help her. For myself, I always face uphill and squat downhill. OK, entering TMI land here! :D
