I am trying to decide if I should buy the convertible now... with the impending september sale... or wait until we really need it. btw baby isn't due until next month;)

It appears that most kids make it at least 6 months in that seat, the majority outgrowing it around 9-12 months. I would wait so that you can get a newer convertible seat. There will be another sale in February and there are almost always seats to be had for not much more than the sale prices, you just have fewer covers to choose from.

DD is 7 months old and still using the bottom slots on her KeyFit 30. She is nowhere near outgrowing this seat. I suspect will make it well past the year mark.
I would not buy a convertible seat now, especially if your baby isn't even born yet. There will always be another sale!

I had the same question before DD was born, but decided to wait and it was the right choice. I ended up getting one of the MAs from Target for $134, so there really, really are always deals out there.

If you find a really great deal, I would go ahead and snap it up because you may need it sooner than you think! This is my post from a related thread:
At about 12 weeks and following a growth spurt, DD2 began SCREAMING every time we put her into the infant carrier. When adjusting straps did not work, we went ahead and installed the RA that I bought on clearance recently at Target (thanks to this board). She is doing much better now and seems much more comfortable. She is a reflux baby, so the curvature of the infant seat may have been the problem following her growth spurt. Although I did not get sufficient mileage out of my Keyfit 30, at least I will get more use out of the RA. As an aside, the fabric in the Keyfit was extremely hot for DD2. She was always so sweaty, even when we garage parked the car. The RA fabric breathes much better.
DS grew out of his infant seat by about 4-5 months, and DD1 grew out of hers by 6 months.

My son is in the Keyfit at 9 months with quite a bit of room to go. He's pretty leggy though. I'm thinking of moving him soon because he sweats so badly in it!
HTH!

Do you have an infant seat already, or are you trying to go straight to a convertible?
If you have an infant seat, just wait as everyone says. Otherwise, pick up something now. About one month before DS was due, we finally started getting around to really preparing for DS. Things like installing the car seats, finding a duffle bag for the hospital, etc. About a few days after I installed the car seat and the day I started collecting stuff for the hospital bag (which was only partially filled), DW went into labor. Premies don't run in her family. DS was fine, other than being small. Unlike other premies his age, he was only in the special section for about 45 min getting checked out. He just decided he was ready a month early. Anyways, my point is, if you're a month out, make sure you have some car seat cuz baby may come at any time now.

Wow! DS2 moved out of the bottom slots at about 2 weeks old! He's still got tons of room to grow and is in the next set of slots, but he's not even 2 months yet :).

My daughter does get sweaty in the keyfit 30, but in spite of that I have to say I LOVE it in comparison to the 2 other infant car setas we have had with the other kids. She is so much more comfortable in it and has been since the first day! She is 9.5 months and nowhere near outgrowing it, although it is getting heavy for me to carry!

DD was in the original Keyfit (limit 22 lbs or so?) until 15 months. I had no reason to think that I was going to have a tiny baby as neither DH or I are small at all, but she is very petite and actually at 21 months is still nowhere near the weight limit for it although she is too tall. I should have moved her into the convertible seat at 13 or 14 months as she started to hate going in the infant seat then - I think because she wasn't sitting up enough and was either uncomfortable or couldn't see enough.
I would definitely not recommend buying a convertible seat before the baby is born, and before you do I would try the baby in it to see if he/she finds it comfortable.

He must be all torso then. Here are some pictures of dd in her KeyFit at birth, again at 4 months (where you can see that the second slots are way above her shoulders) and then today at 7 months. I had been meaning to move the straps up a slot to see how she'd fit and I did so this morning. They are *just* even with her shoulders right now:
