View Full Version : Shopping Cart Seats: Are they safe?
Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I am sure that those who read this forum will have opinions for me! :)
I've never used or even looked closely at those stationary seats affixed to shopping carts. Yesterday, though, I saw someone using one and wondered. Are they safe???? They're awfully high in the air! Are the straps easily adjustable to really restrain a LO? If they're safe, they would be convenient.

Shopping carts on the whole are pretty dangerous (thousands of ER visits a year, lots of topples and bumped heads besides that)... a built in seat might be a little safer, at least it wouldn't fall OFF the cart (since now most infant seats purposefully don't fit on carts... which makes most people just balance them precariously instead!)...but you'd still want to be extra careful when using one (not allow older toddlers to fight near it... my two have pushed a cart over once, fortunately no one was on it, lol). And of course there is the 'ick' factor... most aren't exactly clean :(. But I've thrown caution to the wind when I didn't feel like slinging my 6 mo boy (who could not sit up in the toddler seat yet) and I put him in one of those, with fairly loose icky straps, and he lived :D. Mostly I prefer now to put an infant seat IN the cart..it's very stable that way, and it prevents me from buying more than I can easily put away quickly when I get home... just have to be sure not to toss anything carelessly onto your kiddo, though!

They're usually too icky for me. We either brought in a stroller (luckily, ours can be steered one handed) or plopped the infant seat in the basket.
