View Full Version : Do you use training pants outside the house?

DD is ready for training pants. She pees consistently in the potty and will poop in the potty and/or her diaper. Here is the issue....DD has to lie down for me to put a diaper on her. I cannot do this standing up. I don't want to use pull ups as they really are just a diaper and much more expensive. At home we have been using a diaper or going commando. DD has been trying to pull her diaper down like underwear, so I figure we are ready for the trainers. Does anyone use them when you go out or just at home? I bought the Gerber ones from Target today (knowing that if DD has a poop accident and the trainers get ruined, that it's not super expensive). Did I make a mistake with the Gerbers-should I have bought another brand? How long should I keep DD in them before switching to regular underpants? (DS went from a diaper to underpants in 1 week, but he was over 3 and DD is just going to be 21 months this week).

The Gerber training pants weren't that useful. They did slightly slow down the process of DD's pants getting soaked - maybe once or rwice we avoided needing to change her. However, we used them in rotation with the normal underwear for a long time. I think we still have them as her backup clothing for daycare.

The Gerbers we got from cousins were really thin in comparison to the HAs we have. We did use the HA trainers outside the house, and just made sure to have backup clothes in the car at all times. IKWYM about the laying down to put diapers on- totally gross and not okay for me when we're out and about.

She used the HA trainers several months until we just went, "Oh, I guess you should be wearing regular undies now!" We only did pull-ups when doing long car trips b/c she still wears something to sleep in, but we still didn't want to deal with the laying down for a diaper thing.

So the HA trainers are really that much better? I didn't see them when I went into the store. Are they only online?

I only used training pants on my first child. After that, I just bought pretty panties for the other girls because they liked them better. Liking their panties went a long ways towards keeping them clean and dry. :)

Yes, we use training pants outside the house. But I put a PUL underwear cover over the training pants. I got them at ECstore.com. They contain accidents very well. I don't even know Dora has had one until the next time she goes potty and I see that she's wet (cause she never tells me, errrrrr).

I've never used pullups, because like you said, they are expensive. And we had started cloth diapering around the time I was trying to get Dora PTing, so buying more disposables didn't make sense to me. Besides I wanted her to feel the wet.

Yeah that! My DD (26 mos) wears her HA trainers all day at home, daycare and elsewhere. She trained at 24 mos by going straight to trainers - no pullups. The HA trainers don't keep her clothes dry if she has an accident, but will catch the first few drops if she's preoccupied.

On a recent plane trip she wore pullups, but wouldn't go in them and ended up holding her pee for the entire time. We now have a little Bjorn potty for the car and I need to get her used to sitting on the big toilet. After our trip, she took me into our bathroom at home and showed me her potty and "explained" that was what she uses and not the big one.

I tried to look up the underwear cover at ecstore.com, but it takes me to some web design firm. Is there another site to get the cover from?

These are probably what she was referring to:

I know Bummis and Bumkins also makes a pull on cover. You probably want to size down if you are only putting undewear under them because they are sized for a cloth diaper.

Are these necessary with training underwear or just an addition to have for when DD is in trainers when we are out and about? This whole trainers thing is so new to me. DS went from diaper to underwear but older than DD.

These would be a waterproof cover for over trainers or underwear. If you had the cheap Gerber trainers from Target and these, you would probably be able to contain an accident for long enough to get somewhere to change them - say you are driving or in the middle of the store, it would hopefully keep you from having to change the entire set of clothes (and carseat cover, etc.). They are not going to hold it long term because the trainers are not absorbent enough, but just give you some time. You could also just get the cheap Gerber plastic pants as well - these are the nicer version of those. The Gerbers run massively huge, if you go that route - and I mean huge as in I used the 3-6 month size to make a cover for a 2.5 yo, so take them out of the package and size them up before you buy them.

I never did training pants either, but mine were closer to three when they trained, so as long as we went pretty regularly we didn't have a bunch of "emergency, gotta go now and we are miles from a restroom" situations.

I picked up some for a friend in the store, but they are online and at the outlets as well. Their website is loading slowly for some reason right now, but you'll see them there. I've found some real steals by calling the outlets.

We love the little bjorn potty in the car as well as the piddle pad in the carseat. A few pieces of gear is still cheaper than a box or two of pull-ups.

We have a hurry up cup in the car for DS and emergency potty situations. I've never seen the gerber covers. I need to have a solution for DD and Gerber might work $$ wise. I just cannot afford the HA or the really more expensive items right now. $$ has become very tight. I'm trying to do for DD what I can with extremely limited funds (can you tell I have been watching to much news and holding tight to my bank account).

I think Target has the Gerber training pants, I'm not sure about the waterproof covers. BRU should have the covers if Target/Walmart doesnt.

Here are the covers: http://www.gerberchildrenswear.com/OURPRODUCTS/tabid/118/CategoryID/182/List/1/catpagesize/24/Level/a/ProductID/409/Default.aspx

I like those. They look softer than the Gerber plastic covers. I'm going to start putting DS in trainers pretty soon, so this will be great for out and about.

ETA: I found the Bummi's on Kidssurplus.com. I'm assuming I'll two need one since they will wash and dry quickly. It seems like they're the same material as the Bumpkin's bib (that softer nylon).
