View Full Version : realistic number of shoes for summer?
DD will be 2 in June. How many and what kind of shoes for the summer? Here is her current arsenal:
1 pr crocs (should fit all summer)
SR mary jane sneakers (should fit until June)
cheap target patent leather t-straps for shul (4x a month)
I was going to get her keens (the sitter will not allow sandals but will allow keens or crocs or sneakers). I will probably get a cheap pair of sandals for shul. Am I missing anything?
DS is 4. He has sneakers, crocs and a pair of brown nubuk dressy shoes for shul (great sale and his feet change every 9 months or so now). I was also going to get him keens for camp. Does he need anything else for the summer?
If I'm not careful both kids will have about 8 pair of shoes before I'm done (can you tell I love shoes). Just checking myself with all the mama's on the board for some sound advice on footwear.

One pair of sandals (Keens would fit that bill) and one pair of water shoes maybe if you will be hitting the beach or pool. Wear the current sneakers as long as possible and decide then if they need to be replaced or if you can just wait till the fall to replace them. 2 pairs is all we have ever needed. Some years I have picked up slightly dressier sandals if I didn't think his Tevas would work for an occasion but I didn't need dress shoes. We have gotten by with 2 for quite a while now.

My kids have a pr of sneakers and a pr of crocs. They pretty much live in the crocs. The sneakers are basically for when we do things (like hiking) where crocs are inappropriate. I don't buy them dress shoes unless there is a reason (ie: wedding) to get dress shoes.
Wow - my kids typically have 2 pairs of shoes in the summer - 1 sandal and 1 sneaker. DD, my little shoe lover, may have 1-2 additional pairs, like a dressy shoe or an extra pair of simple sneaks.

Admittedly not realistic I always get way too many. DD is almost 3 y.o.
I will get DD a pr of brown fisherman sandals for summer (most likely a pr of pink ones too). She has a a pair of full coverage sneakers; a pink mary-jane that can be worn on the playground or can be dressed up. I inadventently ended up with 2 pairs of full coverage sneakers for this summer. I got DD a pair of Tsukihoshis in purple when they were on clearance (what was I thinking? This will match almost nothing that DD has!) and got a pair of Saucony breathable sneakers at the recent Stride Rite sale.
I am forgoing the whole Crocs thing this year due to reports of them being unsafe on escalators. They were cute on her last yr but she loves to ride on escalators now. :)
Hmmm... that reminds me....I'll have to get her a pair of water shoes for the beach!

There's a limit? ;)
I usually get DD a pair of sandals (Stride Rite/See Kai Run), a pair of lightweight sneakers (SR), and some water shoes (Target or wherever).
So far this spring I have gotten 2 pairs of sandals (SR sale) and a pair of SKR loafers. She still has some fairly new SR sneakers. Sandals usually get pretty stinky in the summer so that is why I bought 2, for a fresh pair down the road.
DD1 has made me pinky-promise not to buy any more shoes for DD2!

My kids usually wear sandals all summer. We've also had a pair HMD sneakers for messy play at home and water shoes(crocs).
This year, we have *lots* of shoes for both. The feet haven't grown so the winter shoes all still fit. I'm trying to rotate them but it's too much pressure:ROTFLMAO:. I can't believe I'm adding sandals to DS's stash but he doesn't have any for this summer. I'm praying he won't spurt and outgrow them quickly.

I only had one pair of sandals that fit ( I have had really bad luck in getting the right fit) DD last summer and they got way too stinky. I ended up buying a second pair at the end of the summer that got barely any use. They were on sale at least but I wish I would have just bought them in the beginning.
So at least for my own stinky footed DD, I will have at least 2 pairs of sandals for DD, in addition to water shoes and maybe a pair of sneakers.

At this point, I am shooting for: 1 pair crocs, 1 pair white sandles (will work for church), and 1 pair SR mary jane sneakers.
I am somewhat baffled as the girls are getting to the end of their 6/7 size crocs, but the 8/9 size still looks ginormous.

We're in the same place between sizes, but the next size is WAY too big to walk w/o constantly falling.

Hey, how well do the Tsukihoshi sneakers breathe in the summer? I bought Koi a pair last fall and returned them b/c I wasn't sure how well they would breathe. Her feet sweat terribly bad!

You know, I bought them (very, very gently) used from a friend and we have not actually used them over the summer yet. But her prechool has a no Crocs/ sandals policy, so she always wears tennies to school.
I love them and they are wonderfully light though. But glad I only paid $5 and not $50. ;)
I know. DD wears a size 7 shoe and the 6-7 crocs are HUGE on her (the 4-5 are too small though). I don't get crocs, but DD and DS love them.

For DS we try for no more than 3 pairs of shoes at a time - sandals, sneakers and church shoes. Right now he has a bunch more than that because he won't give up a few pairs that don't actually fit or are trashed. He has a bit of a thing for shoes. No idea where he got that :innocent: So right now he has two pairs of $5 Crocs from Finish Line, a pair of Lands End slip on mocs, church shoes, Tevas and 2 pairs of old sneakers that should get thrown out. He had Keens last year, but someone lost them (either dh or the sitter) a month into summer and I was peeved so I am not spending that kind of money again.
I haven't bought dd any shoes specifically for summer. She has taken SO long to grow into the shoes I bought her before she was born that she's well outfitted with no new purchases. I really don't anticipate her actually wearing shoes much this summer to be honest. If she actually decides to walk and really needs something to cover her feet I have a pair of flexible Vincent sandals in the closet that I got from Mamabargains

T has (and will have this summer):
2 pairs of sneakers (Sketchers and Umi)
1 pair of dress shoes (Brown on brown saddle shoes- elephanten (sp?!)
1 pair of rain boots (big and yellow and rubber and great for muddy gardening and cold morning beach combing)
and then in summer he has a pair of leather fisherman type sandals and a pair of Keens. Just bought him the Keens in size 13, ack.
We do have a lot of shoes around here but I never pay anything close to full price.

I usually do 1 pr of sneakers and 1 pr of sandals. This year we're living large with a pair of Crocs I got on clearance thrown into the mix. ;) The sneakers won't get a ton of wear, but they come in handy for playgrounds with mulch, etc. Plus we're still having cold days here, and DS had outgrown his old sneakers.

DD-3 years old will have for the summer:
1-preschool sneakers
1-non-school sneakers
1-dressy mary jane
1-fisherman sandal
I was very surprised how trashed the school sneakers have become so quickly. I invested in some shoes in the next size up for preschool on Amazon.com for $9.49/pair.
I'm leaning towards the following after reading the posts:
DD
Keens (if I can get them discounted somewhere)
some type of sneaker for the playground and rainy days
White fisherman sandal for dress
crocs for the pool (got them for $10--last years style, or DD would not have them)
DS
sneakers (he will get a decent new pair when he outgrows what he currently has)
Keens
Crocs (got a pair onsale at crocs.com and DS lives in them)
I'm going to let DS wear his sneakers for dress over the summer b/c he will live in the crocs and keens anyway, so the sneakers will look nice.

My almost-3yo and 5.5-yo each have:
one pair of white sandals
one pair of pink canvas sneakers (can wear w/o socks with casual dresses if needed)
one pair of sneakers that are appropriate for playground or getting dirty
one pair of crocs for pool and when they want to slip into something quickly (melaine: both of mine are in between sizes on crocs, too, and it's very annoying! I may have to find knockoffs for them this summer...)
