Hi Moms (& Dads) -

My Father in Law was helping SIL shop for a dresser/hutch combo like the one we have for our DD. (Munire "combo" dresser with optional hutch). While at Buy Buy Baby in the Detroit area, he was told by a salesperson that it was not safe to use the dresser as a changing area with the hutch attached (as we're using it now). He said she quoted him some numbered regulation (he couldn't remember exactly)... Now I'm concerned about our set up! I have scoured the internet (JPMA, CPSC) for any possible information or regulations related to these dresser/hutch combos being used as a changing table, and have come up empty handed. Can you shed any light on what this salesperson was talking about?

Thanks,
Jen

FWIW, we have removed one of the shelves on the hutch to make it easier to use the space below the top shelf as a changing area (ie, space to change, and space for baby to sit up).

I know every dresser/hutch I have ever seen does tell you to put the hutch on after you have stopped using the dresser as a changing table.

I would have concerns with stuff on the shelves on the hutch falling over onto my baby -- esp how wiggly he is. Or him sitting up and bonking his head on it, etc.

Hmm, yeah, that could happen. I didn't see any warning to that effect when I bought ours, though. Maybe I wasn't looking very carefully or maybe they told my DH or someone else who was with me that day. We only looked at dressers/hutches at one locally owned store. In 15 months we haven't had any problems, but maybe I will just replace all the stuff I have up there with stuffed animals, just in case. I think we're getting to the end of using the changing table anyway because DD is so wiggly. Probably better to just use the floor.
