DS1 has had Bakugans for a long time but always just messes around with them, so I thought we should try to figure out how to really play. I tried to play with him today, so I pulled out the rules and tried to make sense of them. I do not get it at all. It seems like they leave out a lot of information that you would need to know to actually play a game. I gave up and made up our own game with it, and DS1 said he liked our rules better!
Just wondering if I'm dense or if the directions are lacking.

I don't have an answer for you, but I just wanted to chime in and say "me too" :) My son likes Bakugan as well, but I have no idea what the rules are for the game. I asked my son what the point of the whole thing was and he just replied "to battle"...no help I know, but I'm interested if anyone has more info. We just randomly play with them and don't really have a game or anything.

My kids collect Bakugan and none of us have any ideas what the rules are!

I think both kids put out a card then select their Bakugan. Roll it out and if they both open it's a battle. Then you look at the numbers on the Bakugan and you can add points depending on the card used. Whomever has the highest points wins. I find it very confusing but DS enjoys playing it with friends at school.

That is sort of how we played it, but if you read the rules, there are also ability cards, and there are also different things you do if you are on a gate card by yourself versus if someone else has a Bakugan onto the same gate card. You are supposed to try to capture eachother's gate cards (or the bakugans, I'm not sure) too, but the directions get really vague in that area - and vague about how to incorporate the ability cards. Also, all the points and stuff are based on the color of the Bakugan, and the colors on the cards, and I find the colors kind of hard to match up between the cards and the Bakugan.
I think they just tried to make a game around these cool little toys, and the game isn't that great.

Yes, they made the video and toy first then the game. It really doesn't have complete rules. Drives my DH the gamer crazy. Pokemon is a better game, has improved my son's reading for sure. It would help in math for some kids, but Harvey's pretty far ahead in math already. Certainly helps with planning/sequencing. You need to get a starter deck, however, just not those packs. We each put together a deck so we can play with him. I found a good video on Pokemon rules, but nothing like that for Bakugan. As your kids get older there are other card games built on different themes that have pretty complex rules that I think are worth playing.
