I have this sewing book but since it's in Japanese it's little help determining the fabric of this jumper

I walked around Hancocks and JoAnns and found nothing similar (the oh-so-helpful lady at the cutting counter told me it was corduroy) I don't mind fabric online I just need to know what I am actually searching for! :)

it almost looks like a tweed

But that jumper would look great in courderoy, denim, wool suiting, just about any heavier bottom weight material. VERY cute!

You don't think it needs to be really thick like it appears in the picture to hang that way?

I am clueless sewing anything but cotton, denim or felt. I am trying to branch out with some Fall/Winter clothe for DD.

I agree with pp that it "looks" like tweed, but I actually think it's a thick knit fabric made to look like tweed with flecks in it. Tweed would not be too comfortable, imo, for a child's jumper as it's usually made from wool. I have no idea what to call the fabric I'm thinking of though. I sew too and in my previous life worked in the textile industry, albeit the industrial part of it. Hmmm...I'll try to look in a couple of books I have here and see if I find something.

Ok, I can't really find anything...the closest is a tweed boucle knit...has good drape properties. The picture makes the jumper look a little stiff, so maybe it's a woven tweed boucle. Search on that and see if you find anything. I agree with pp, that any bottom weight fabric would look nice with that pattern. Good luck!

I would start going to specialty fabric stores, forget JoAnn's and Hancocks, they are only good for very basic things.

It looks like tweed to me too and I think for it to hang like that you will need a material equivelent to tweed in thickness.
