I am being given a gift of a subscription to a "current events" news magazine for my Kindle; I just have to choose which one. It has been so long since I subscribed to anything like this. Are there substantive differences between Time and Newsweek? Would you choose something else entirely? TIA!

Personally I love The Economist. It's offers a smart analysis of US & international news, not just a "digest / summary" like Time, Newsweek, or US New & World Reports. Those feel a little dumbed-down to me. The downside is that it's more conservative politically than I am, plus pretty expensive, but I think it's worth it.

We get The Economist, but if you're looking for something a little lighter, but still substantive, I LOVE The Week. It's an amalgam of articles from newspapers and magazines from across the world. Love it.

I, too, love the Economist. I don't find it *that* conservative and I consider myself fairly liberal. I love the worldview it takes. I love that it gives me more facts than even NPR does :)

Yeah, I've liked the Economist a lot when I've picked it up in an airport. It seems, though, that the Kindle price is outrageous. It is almost 10x as much as these others. I think the options that my "fairy godmother" had in mind are Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, Forbes (more finance-y than I want), Fortune (same), Atlantic, Nation. I might be missing one, that was just a quick scan. Thoughts?

I've always liked those first three you mentioned (more 'fun' to read)... my husband has been getting The Economist (expensive!) and is not sure if he's going to renew now. It's always looked too boring to me, and hard to get through an article, esp. with a baby now. Plus they send out an issue every two weeks, I think, and he never has time to read them all (except on an occasional business trip).

The Economist is great, but I never can get through it within a week.
The Week is my all-time favorite news magazine. It is perfect for a distracted mom who can only read little bits at a time. I always feel just informed enough for adult conversation and I can go and read more online on the stories that I am interested in. Plus, they also cover the tabloids!
