I really need to figure out a twin bed and nightstand for DS before baby #2 arrives. I lean towards more modern design, but am open to all styles at this point. Here are some places I am looking, please let me know if there are other stores I should check out and if you have any BTDT experience.

Room & Board
Pottery Barn Kids
Land of Nod
Ikea

I prefer being able to see the bed in person, but it's not a total deal breaker if I know it's a good company and well constructed.

Thanks!

We bought two twin beds, two dressers and a desk made by Young America - the quality is excellent and the furniture is beautiful. They have held up to two rough & tumble boys with over 5 years of wear and tear, no problem: http://www.youngamerica.com/
If you call them or check their web site they can direct you to a local store in your area that carries their furniture so you can see it IRL. If there is nothing close, they can give you measurements of a particular piece you are interested in and/or send you a catalog. Buy Buy Baby carries their stuff and I believe BBB can "special order" anything in the Young America line (and you can use a 20% off coupon as well). Happy Shopping!

we have a twin from IKEA and were quite happy with it (used it for 3 years+). We only stopped using it when we invested in some bunk beds from Pottery Barn Kids (thrilled with these as well!). We've had the bunk beds for 2+ years.

If you want modern then Ikea might be a great place to start.

We bought DS a Hemnes Bed, Hemnes dresser and Expedit 4x4 shelf unit from Ikea when he turned 3. THe bed was only $200 and has held up really well for the last 2 years. I looked at a lot of expensive furniture that wasn't nearly as well made. We spent $600 total for all of it, and I was looking at more than that for just a bed at some stores.

We bought DS this bed and we love it. Plus its made in the USA. Its totally solid in the construction. Can't say enough great things about it.

My kids started with mattress/box springs on the floor. We then bought headboards from Craigslist.

DS got a nightstand this year at a garage sale for $5. It's a bit dated looking, but will take a beating :). He also got a desk that is in wonderful shape for free . Someone had put it out at the curb with a Free sign!

Room and Board has some beautiful beds. After checking out Land of Nod, I realize the price is going to be much higher due to delivery. I can get R&B beds locally. I also like that they have solid hardwood made in the USA. Leaning towards the Pogo bed: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=19615&catalog=room&category=rm_kids&subcategory=kid_bed_bnk_crib

Love the look of the Perspective bed, but the frame is steel - not so kid friendly.
