I'm sure we all have a list of favorite seasonal/holiday songs, but I'm curious which ones you find cringe worthy. There's a select few that make me change the station:
1. Feliz Navidad...just too repetitive
2. Christmas Shoes...nothing puts a damper on holiday cheer like a song about a child buying a gift for his dying mother
3. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer...enjoyed it the first few times I heard it as a kid, but now it's just annoying

Carol of the Bells. Hate it. I call it the Psychotic Christmas Song.
I also agree with the Christmas Shoes. I change the station as soon as it comes on. Such a depressing song.

Alot.
Feliz Navidad
Silver Bells
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause
That "Simply Having a Wonderful Xmastime" song by Paul McCartney ... <shudder>
I could do without "Santa Baby."

OMG, I'm glad DH and I aren't the only ones who hate the Christmas Shoes song. We also hate (and change the channel when it comes on) "Mary did you know" (I think it might have Kenny Rogers or some other raspy-voiced guy singing.) DH wants to make a mix of those two songs and other Christmas ones that we despise; I told him to do it and post it on Youtube. :ROTFLMAO:

Christmas Shoes - Who decided this was a festive song?? My dad had a record called "Bummer Christmas"... the songs were all sad Christmas tunes, and I think we listened to it once.... that song could qualify to be on it.
Barbara Streisand's version of Jingle Bells- Holy crap. It's like she's on meth or something.
Last Christmas- Wham. Ugh.
and Definitely- Santa Baby- Both Eartha Kitt and Madonna's versions.

*It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (the Staples ads from the mid 90s really ruined it for me)
*Rockin Around the Christmas Tree (not so bad on Home Alone, but what did it for me was every single dance troop in our hometown Christmas Parade did it every year....and probably still do)
*Madonna's version of Santa Baby (the original is okay once or twice)
*Christmas Shoes
*Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer
*I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
I actually really enjoyed Last Christmas by Wham! and it's still on my Christmas CD, but it's starting to get a little over played on the radio.
I am pretty tolerant of Christmas music a couple of weeks before Christmas but I hate it when it starts before Thanksgiving.

Any song in by the Chipmunks or whatever they are called. It's like running nails down a chalk board.
And I absolutely hate Madonna's Santa Baby. I can't stand Madonna anyway- don't even get me started. But that version makes me want to puke.

UGH!!! CHRISTMAS SHOES!!! It makes me want to put a bullet in my head. Seriously, who thought that was a "festive" song? What's "festive" about making people cry in their cars as they listen to the radio?!
ITA with the Barbara version of Jingle Bells. Woman was smoking *something* when that was recorded. Way to take "jazzy" in the complete wrong direction.
I'm sure there's more, but I've temporarily blocked them from my memory bank in the hopes of maintaining some form of holiday sanity while I can.

I will say it.
White Christmas.
I know, I know, it's a HUGE classic. If I only heard it a few times I would love it but since most radio stations steer away from religious songs, I get so tired of hearing the same 10 secular songs sung by 3,000 different people 35,000 different ways. It's the repetition more than the actual song.
The others mentioned also make the list, although I do like Mary Did You Know too.

OMG!!! I just had to hear what you were talking about in reference to Barbara Streisand's Jingle Bells, so I went to you tube. She totally sounds like she's on speed! How awful!
Oh, and another vote for I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. I'm not a big fan of the song in general, but the nasal, little kid that I always hear singing it just sends me through the roof. Ugh.

"It's the most wonderful time of the year" sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard to me! In general, I'm not crazy about the enforced jollity aspect of holiday music. But I do find myself humming it for weeks on end nonetheless. Argh, can't get that awful tune out of my head now!

I haven't heard of some of the songs pp mentioned, and I'm NOT googling them. My taste in Christmas music runs more to the religious than the secular with so many years singing choral music, but as a (former) singer, and a soprano, I can say without a doubt that I hate "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree". Also not real keen on the "Huron Carol" or "Lo how a rose...". I agree with those that don't like "Santa Baby" or "The most wonderful time of the year". I'm sure there are more...give me another week of listening to the radio.
Chirstmas Shoes. It's the one song guarranteed to make me change the radio station.
Mine, without a doubt, is the Andy Williams song "Happy Holidays/It’s the Holiday Season." :banghead: When trying to find the exact name of it, I ran across a blogger who agrees with me... Worst Christmas Song Ever (http://donklephant.com/2005/12/07/worst-christmas-song-ever/) It's just completely ridiculous. And I'm a HUGE fan of all (well, most) things Christmas.
Christmas Shoes makes me want to throw the car radio out the window and drive over a cliff.
Also I don't care for "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" song when associated with Christmas but I :heartbeat: the Staples commercial that uses it for Back to School.

Agreed on the nasally ick factor, but I like John Mellencamp's version.
I changed the station yesterday when Christmas Shoes came on and had to explain the song to DH.
Nthing Grandma got ran over by a reindeer. Evidentally there's a tv special based on it now and SIL showed it to DS over the weekend. Ick.

Am I the only one who's never heard of The Christmas Shoes? Don't link it for me, it's ok, I clearly do not need to hear this one. But I'm not recalling it at all!
FTR, I love the religions ones like Silent Night and Come All Ye Faithful, and The First Noel. Nice Jewish girl and all. I think my very favorite is the Ye Merry Gentlemen one by the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah Maclaughlin. Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid, and that instrumental one by that group that makes a mint this time of year whose name I don't remember.

It's what Snopes calls "glurge" ... so horrific! Usually played on the "light FM" stations. Hate that I/we fall into their target demographic, which is typically women 29-35 or something like that. (DH used to work in radio so I have all KINDS of fun facts!)
It's got to be the most depressing *secular* tune played this time of year. (IMO, the most depressing religious one is the one about the massacre of the Holy Innocents, followed a close second by 'Good King Wensceslas.')
.... that instrumental one by that group that makes a mint this time of year whose name I don't remember.
Which one? Mannheim Steamroller or Trans-Siberian Orchestra? (I learned the other day that DH hates Steamroller. Been together 7 years and I still learn new things about him ... LOL!)
Oh, and I actually *like* "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" ... my h.s. women's ensemble used to perform it every holiday concert, so I have a lot of fond memories of performing it, despite my not-so-fond memories of rehearsing it. (Can still hear Mr. Dalton screaming "Dur-ful? Dur-ful? What's a Dur-ful?" ... well, Mr. D., it's kind of like a Tribble...)

I am a lover of Christmas music- including my all time favorite, Last Christmas (Wham version only). But I do truly hate some of them- to reiterate: Christmas Shoes (butterfly kisses also makes me want to vomit, no fan of that man), Grandma got run over by a reindeer, and Santa Baby.
Now for those not listed already-
Dominic the Christmas Donkey
Hey Santa by Wilson Phillips or some portion- seriously, like nails on a chalkboard
and new to my list this year, Jewel's version of Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer.
I could probably go on with covers- but let's just say not every Christmas song needed to be remade by modern artists (particularly, 99% of the "American Idol" Christmas covers).

Have any of you ever seen the Pop Up Video version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' ... it doesn't improve the song, but it makes it laughable because one of the last fun-facts is that the people who lived wherever the $$ raised by Band Aid was going weren't Christian, so they probably didn't care that it was Christmas!

Silent Night. To me it's like the national anthem..... lovely song & all but too hard to SING!
Carol of the Bells. Hate it. I call it the Psychotic Christmas Song.
Hee hee. It's that minor key it's in, sounds like a horror movie. In my head the lyrics are "Here come the bells / so many bells / oh no the bells / run from the bells"......

I know nothing about music and could not tell you that song is in a minor key, but :ROTFLMAO: at this!!! I always think it sounds like a horror movie. And your lyrics about the bells are perfect :hysterical:

I really hate Feliz Navidad. And now it's in my head. Thanks. I also hate the Christmas Shoes song, but then I hate any song/tv show/movie that tries soooo hard to make someone cry. Not going to work on me! Just makes me roll my eyes.
I never thought of Barbra Streisand's Jingle Bells as being over the top, but that's just because I grew up listening to it. My dad put several Christmas albums on a reel-to-reel tape (yes, child of the 70s!) so that we could listen to hours of music without having to flip the records over.
Right now, I'm enjoying singing along with any version of the 12 Days of Christmas, but I don't know how much longer that will last! DS1 enjoys my version of Walking in a Winter Wonderland - I change the refrain to "walking 'round in women's underwear."

I've never heard Christmas Shoes either, and I'm NOT going to go find it! Sounds terrible. I totally agree with Carol of the Bells, I pretty much despise all things by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, they've ruined that song, which may have been okay before but I can't remember. Also all the Chipmunks ones, for some reason DH took that CD from his parents place, but now its hiding...

'Carol of the Bells' was also a standard for our h.s. "concert chorus" ... we'd to that & "12 Days of Christmas" ourselved and finish the concert with an arrangement of "White Christmas" that included the band.
I have fond memories of singing it, but I can see how it would get annoying if you'd had to endure the TSO or Mannheim Steamroller versions ad nauseum. (Srsly, their "concept album" had it in context with a story they were telling, so it's actually one of my favorite pieces from the album, but only in the context of the album.)
And I don't quite get all the "Santa Baby" hate ... it's a golddigger song, for sure, but I think it's done very tongue-in-cheek. Of course, that would mean I've only heard the Eartha Kitt version (she pretty much purrs through it; I find this to be hilarious) and not Madonna. (FTR, Madonna is a no-talent hack. But, man do I admire her marketing savvy!)

AWFUL!!! I just heard it for the first time yesterday- well part of it, but enough of it. I made the huge mistake of googling it after commenting about it on FB. Worst "Christmas" song ever! Not only is the song majorly depressing, but the kids who sing at the end give it a super creepy feeling, too.

1. Chipmunk's Christmas song
2. Santa Baby
3. Little Drummer Boy - I cannot stand the pa-rum-pa-pum-pum part. I know it is a classic, but I can't stand it.
4. Bruce Springteen's Santa Clause is Coming to Town.
I admit, I don't think I have ever heard "Christmas Shoes".

Oooh, have I got a version for you. This is so funny I urge you to not have to pee before clicking. Imagine it with alcoholic beverages. The first one is old and there's no vid for it, so someone made a video to kind of go with it. Not that funny, so just listen to her. But it's her singing that is so funny. The second one is the actual woman, but many many years later, she's much older, and it's not the same brilliance, but it's enough where you can laugh anyway. Click the first one first! As it happens, I'm singing this (with updated beverages from the not from the '70's) on Saturday in a Holiday Cabaret. I just hope I can channel a glimmer of her quick wit. Can't wait to make an ass of myself!

I'm going to be the lone voice of dissent re: "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer". My Grandma thought the song was hysterical and every time I hear it, I think of her. I am, however, disgusted that it was turned into a cartoon. WTH?
Songs like "Christmas Shoes" make me glad that I rarely listen to commercial radio! (Seriously, that kids choir at the end makes me want to :barf:)
