I know this is a very hot topic. :ROTFLMAO:DH hates just having a single color while I love that uniform look. My fave is an all gold/clear ornament tree with white lights. It sparkles!
We do multi-colored strands that blink. A few of the strands also have timers to variate the blinking.

I like all white lights on our indoor tree. We are getting two trees again this year so we do one with white and one that has multicolored. I use about 700-1000 lights per tree, I like a lot of lights ;)
I do the multicolored lit tree with kids themed ornaments (disney, DD's my first christmas, whimiscal santas and snowmen etc) and the white lit one with more sophisticated ones (glass balls and silver snowflakes, that sort of thing). I started last year when we got a bigger house since I have so many ornaments that they really don't fit on one tree.
Outdoors - we have some all green, all white and all red on different trees/shrubs. It was warm last weekend so DH went nuts.

White lights for our indoor tree but if we decorated our outdoor trees I thinkit would be fun to do strands of colored lights (the big ones) around them. However, it's too friggin cold to decorate the outdoor trees here (imho) so we dont' go to that much trouble. :D

White on the indoor tree; multi-color strands on the front of the house.

Whatever the kids chose each year. We're pretty informal here.

DH insisted on clear lights.
I wanted multicolored lights, but since the tree is pre-lit and for both of us, I got the clear lights. (If it were up to me, it'd have been a better quality plain tree with strands of lights. I am an expert light putter-upper.)
Maybe if we do a separate kids' tree in the future, we will do multicolored lights on that; I kind of miss the multicolored ones because that's what my family always had.

Inside on the tree we have a prestrung fake tree with all white lights. We have a set of matching red balls and some colored ones, and then we put up all our collective ornaments. I kinda like the non-uniform look on the main tree. It makes it more personal IMO.
I also like the white lights outside too. However, I LOVE our multicolored ones on our 50's ranch house. It just feels so cozy/50's or something. (Our house is also decorated in the spirit of mid-century modern too.)

I am so crazy I stopped doing lights because of the lead. I am not sure I even fully understand the issue, but last year the BPA story broke and I freaked out in general.

Many of the older, cheaper sets have insulated the wires with lead (MIC issue, really, like the lead paint on toys MIC) ... my tree, in fact, has lead warnings on it. So does my tree-topper.

We currently have multi colored motion lights. If those have died I am not sure what I'd do I think I'd like to try all clear lights. We use a fresh tree every year.

We have two bay windows and 2 small trees and every year we put up a small "classy tree" (white lights) and a "trashy tree" (multicolor).
Personally I think single color looks more elegant but multicolor looks more family/homey. They're both nice.

We always used white lights before kids. We also liked our tree to have a designer look, ie: a color scheme and no missmatched ornaments, but now that we have kids, our tree looks very different.
We have colored lights and crazy ornaments of all colors and sizes. The kids love it.

We don't have any trees up yet, we're doing it this weekend.
We have white for inside.
Our neighborhood does "street trees" and we all use the large multi-color ceramic bulbs, placing a white/yello one at the top of the tree for these. Looks great! I think these trees are coming in this weekend.

i like the traditional white lights. but when we had ds1 we decided to add some color.
we do all tiny white lights with about 2 strands of colored bulbs. just for a little pop of color. bearable by all.

Your polls are too controversial for my taste and I respectfully request that you refrain from such difficult subject-matter.
While I'm here, however, I will share with you that our Xmas tree has white lights and white lights only, as they came with the tree build right in. We bought it from Costco two years ago. We are very happy it. Only wish the lights would do more than sit there or flicker on or off; we like the stuff that sort of fades in and out smoothly. Oh well.

I gave in to my kids begging this year and bought multicolored lights. Don't have the tree yet so I don't know how much I'll hate it yet. I adore the white lights and a classier looking tree but they were SO happy when I brought home the multis. Christmas is for children, right?

I like the simplicity of single color lights but I think children often prefer the multicolor lights so that is what we do.

The lights this year are multi-colored, but I also have enough white lights for that option.

Many strands of white and many strands of pink. So, pink and white, but NOT multicolored.

I voted other, because every year we decide as a family whether to do multi or white. No blinking though.

I trade off from year to year, whatever I feel like that year. Sometimes white, sometimes multi.

Only white. I do like looking at other people's multi-colored lights, but I like a simpler look for myself. DS commented that he loves looking at people's colored lights for their outside decorations. I agree that children seem attracted to the multicolor. Maybe I'll change their "kid's" tree downstairs to multi.

In answer to the question, we have an enormous amount of, ahem, paraphanalia, for the tree. We go through phases of all white lights, tiny colored, large multi-colored glass in clear, and large multi-colored glass in opaque. This year will be tiny multi-colored again - we'll go that route until I can be sure DS won't touch the larger bulbs which can get hot. We can't do all clear again unless I buy more strands, and we've decided if we buy more, we'll buy LED, which will mean replacing MANY strings at a time...yada yada...suffice it to say, we're making do with what we have for the time being.
Outdoors lights had to be replaced this year due to some terrible storms last winter and they are warm white LEDs. They seem a bit dim to my eye since I'm used to the others, but I'm happy I found the "warm" and didn't have to go with the bluish cold ones.
What I really want someday is bubble lights, though!!!
We use blue lights and clear (white) lights. I really like the look.

I'm all over the map. Colors everywhere on ours. I actually just came home w/ some new Led multi-colred lights! I was excited b/c I found a good deal and I want to slowly change out our old lights to led.
Funny though, I LOVE when I go to people's homes and they have a one or two color theme going on. It's soo pretty.
I just can't do it. I'm a hot mess.

LOL you have the "girly" tree and we've got the "boyish" one :)

Well, we compromised. My DH won his preference for lights - all white LED - and I won my preference for ornaments (mishmash of homemade ones in all sorts of colours).

DH insists on multi-colored. I barely won the mini-lights over his perferance of the big, ceramic bulbs.

So is it possible to get lights with no lead? Details please!
*sigh* We have plain blucky white lights because MIL insisted that we get plain blucky white lights, and DH followed her lead. I want bright multi colored lights. But I got him to put multi colored lights up outside. :) So pretty. (I've got to sneak & get colored lights next year. And gold garland or beaded garland to replace the completely out of place sliver garland we have.)
Personally I think single color looks more elegant but multicolor looks more family/homey. They're both nice.
:yeahthat:
I've never been that elegant, so my trees are always multi-color, and I like them that way. I do think the single-color trees are beautiful. They just aren't "me."
However, I much prefer the clear icicles on the gables instead of the colored or multi-colored ones.

I haven't checked the LED lights. Since they pull less power, their wires may not be coated in lead like the regular incandescent lights do.
Anyone else have any input on that?

We do all white lights for the tree with a mish mash of ornaments. DH's mom has been buying him one special waterford bulb ornament every year since he was 16 (he is 30 now) so we usually put those up, plus our one special ornament we have been buying every year since we got engaged. Now we are adding the ornaments we pick for DS (2 so far). Plus a few special ornaments that we have picked up randomly. After that we usually fill the rest of the tree up with filler ornaments which until this year were jewel toned bulbs.
I am very ba-humbug this year though. Since DS is walking and grabbing things this year we could only decorate the tree from half up. AND DH didn't want to chance it this year and so refrained from hanging up his waterfords (I completely agree, but am still sad). So, this year, we only have a handful of ornaments up that we wouldn't mind losing if the tree came down. We did try to make the tree look less sparse by putting red bows on the branches. that helped a little, but I can't help but look at pictures of our tree last year and then our tree this year and feel bummed.
Also, we had to move the ornaments up a little bit more because it turns out that DS can reach higher than we originally thought.
