It rains a lot here & gets pretty windy too. None of my umbrellas do a good job. They keep flipping over in the wind (and I have had a few break too). I do wear a rain jacket but would still like to use an unbrella for more coverage. I am not looking for anything fancy, no need to fit in a purse, doesn't need to look cute. Just strong & functional with good coverage. Any recommendations.
Thanks much
Try going to a sporting goods store and look at the golf umbrellas. They have umbrellas that are made specifically to stand up to wind. I got a large black umbrella from Sports Authority last week for $14.99. I was tired of my small umbrellas that get all bent from the wind. HTH!

I had the same problem since the few blocks between the subway and my office are like a man made wind tunnel...
you turn the corner and can literally be blown away....
I invested in two compact Windbrella brand umbrellas....they are about 18-20 inches when folded to their smallest size...they have larger ones but I needed one that would fit in my everyday tote bag...
thus far they proved they really are wind resistant in the heaviest "city tornadoes"
they are available on amazon

I'm also in need of a good, windproof umbrella. where did you see the compact Windbrella umbrellas? I saw some on Amazon, but it was one of those things where Amazon wasn't really selling it, but rather you can purchase it from another company through Amazon. The one I saw was $20-something dollar + twenty dollars shipping!

I did all kinds of research and was sick of boring and junky drugstore umbrellas. There is a store called Rain or Shine and they have the coolest selection of umbrellas made all over the world, from inexpensive ones to the same kind used by the royal family. I ended up with a really classy Doppler stick umbrella for about $35 and a plaid Knirps folding umbrella made in Germany for about $40, both which I LOVE. They also have a bunch of fun Marimekko print umbrellas. Mine are so sturdy, the go "ka-chunk" when you open them and are so strong.
The owners/staff are also very nice and are great with email to help you find something they might not have posted (looks like they've tried to edit their listings, but they really have a ton to choose from). They even emailed me photos of other colors they have in the store.

Other than that, ebags has Knirps umbrellas too, with reviews. But I love rain or shine.

What a great site! I've been looking for a compact auto open/close umbrella, and one of these might just fit the bill :p

Honestly, I love the umbrellas we got at IKEA - they're each under $5, sturdy as can be and provide excellent wind/rain coverage. Unfortunately both ours have been "borrowed" and not returned at different times, so we need to go back to IKEA for more!
