This weekend our kitty took a turn for the worse. She's had a rough year but was hanging in there. Luckily I had childcare for the boys. I didn't know for sure they were going to recommend that today but I was pretty sure. So, it was just me and our 12yo cat. They did an x-ray first (1st one ever) and found just a giant tumor in her chest so that plus fluid were just really impairing her breathing. The worst part was having to make the choice to do it. So much of me just wanted to bring her home and soak up a few more hours or days with her.
Bye, Pig.
Beth
I'm so sorry you had to do that alone. She's out of pain now. Hugs.

It is so hard to make that decision. I've had to do it twice now and I've hated it both times. So sorry you had to go through that alone. Hugs. :hug:

I'm so sorry. Hugs to you Beth, that's such a hard decision to make.
I am so sorry for your loss. Our cat passed away in Feb, almost a month after his 15th birthday. It was a difficult decision to put him down as well. (((Hugs)))

So sorry, Beth. :hug:
The cat that I've had since college is 11 and just not doing as well lately. She's been with me through so much and it breaks my heart to think of her not with us.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had to put my big 17 year old orange tabby down this past summer, so I know how hard it is.
This poem/prayer helped me - I hope it will help you too:
A Prayer for Animals
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated;
for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.
(It is often attributed to Albert Schweitzer, although he was probably not the author.)
Hugs.

((((((hugs))))))) to all of you who have been through this ever. I knew there had been a few recent losses but I didn't know there were quite so many. I'm still in denial mode right now and worried about when it really hits.

Big hugs to you. It is so hard to say goodbye to a sweet kitty. I know what you meant about wanting to take kitty home to spend a few more days - we went through that a couple years ago with our dear kitty. Cherish the good memories of your furry friend.
So sorry to hear of this. What a sad thing and especially right before the holidays. Hang in there.
I am so sorry. Any pet, IMO is part of the family. I'm so sorry for this difficult time :(

Beth, I am so very sorry for your loss. It is agonizing to lose a beloved pet and I know it was so hard for you to make that choice. Your act was loving and selfless and I am so sorry for the grief you and your family are experiencing, especially during the holidays.
Hugs to you all!

So sorry for your loss. I've been there- found out earlier this year one week before my due date that our 6yo kitty (our first baby) had metastatic cancer. I remember thinking maybe we could delay just another day, week, etc but in the end knew it would be for us and not for him. Sometimes the right thing to do is the most difficult. DH and I have found it helpful to talk frequently about all our happy/funny memories of him.

I am sorry for your loss. I am sure you and your family love Pig very much, but you did the right thing.
We struggled with this when my cat was partially paralyzed from nerve damage due to diabetes about 6 years ago. Our family made the decision to bring him to the vet, but Shadow decided he'd go on his own terms. They found him curled up in the garage. (I'd raised Shadow from an 8-week-old kitten I got when I was 11; when I went off to college, my brother Joe took care of him for me. He was mighty peeved with me for leaving, but we made it up.)
Last year, my dad struggled with the decision to put my brother's dog, Lucky, down. She was riddled with tumors and in so much pain, though, that it was really the right decision. Dad said he took her in and they said a prayer, and then the vet started the procedure ... and it was much easier than he thought it would be, especially knowing she wasn't in pain anymore.

That last part is what I keep telling myself. It seemed like she wasn't able to sleep the past few days but I was able to help her finally get to sleep. Still a sad thing to do though.
Thank you again, everyone.
