So now that I'm a mom I have less time to go to a salon to get my hair done. Haircuts I won't give up but color I hope to do at home. I'm just covering some grays. I don't want to go permanent color because the maintenance is easier with sermipermanent.
What brands do you recommend?

Natural Insticts. I love it because it looks natural, and grows in nicely. No real visible roots because it gradually fades. I highly recommend it. You can get it anywhere (Target, cvs, etc)

I used to use Garnier Fructis or Clairol Natural Instincts. Doing a full color was actually too much for me to maintain, so I switched to getting highlights every 12 weeks when I get my hair cut. Pregnancy gave me a big streak of gray right in the front, though, so I may have to change up what I get done.

Ion Demi Permanent...from Sally Beauty Supply. I just tried it so I could extend the time between pro colorings and it was great. My hair was shiny and conditioned...very similar to Redken Shades EQ which I'm a HUGE fan of. Couldn't believe how similar the results were, and for so cheap! Just be careful to choose a shade lighter than you think you want-it comes out dark. I read that online and chose lighter and probably still could have gone a shade lighter than that.

I like all of L'Oreal's home haircolor products. My one big tip is that if you are used to having salon color and your hair is chin length or longer, BUY TWO BOXES. You'll get much better results if your coverage is even. I have pretty fine, shoulder-length hair and do my own color - but one box is never enough. Target and such places often sell two-packs of haircolor at a discount.

I used to love love Redken Shades EQ but am not a beauty professional and cannot buy it. I will definitely try the Ion product at Sallys if it is similar.
Of course, nothing beats being able to get baby food and hair color at my favorite store Target!

I almost ordered some Shades on ebay but didn't want to pay the shipping on the developer!! I have tried tons of drug store boxes and none have left my hair feeling healthy like Shades. That's when I started googling and found Ion. Here's a link to their color chart http://demandware.edgesuite.net/aabj_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-SA-Site/Sites-SA-Library/default/v1252375439926/MiscImages/ion-demi-color-chart.pdf If you know what color(s) you used with Shades it shows you ones that are similar!

Another big fan of Natural Instincts. It has none of that gross ammonia smell and the colors are rich.

Great product. My hair now feels like it did after using Shades EQ for a lot less money! Next time I'm going to get the stuff to seal the cuticle that they recommended. After buying all the supplies it was less than $20 and much more convenient (after baby goes to bed). All I have to do it buy more color and developer in a few months!
I am going to try to L'Oreal Color Vive but are there any other recommendations for color safe shampoo? I miss my Redken Color Protect.

Glad you liked it!!! I was really impressed by how good my hair felt with it. I actually need to do it again.

THANK YOU for posting the link to the chart . . . I have one more treatment's worth of Shades EQ (thanks to my former stylist) and have been desperate to find a replacement.
