This is for a friend who is not a native English speaker. She is looking for grammar books for a first grader, presumably to help her. Personally, I don't see the need, but.. any ideas?

Our private school uses the Shurley English method, which is also used for home schooling:

I use First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind (http://www.amazon.com/First-Language-Lessons-Well-Trained-Mind/dp/0971412979/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271898329&sr=8-1) with my daughter. They have a first/second grade book and then individual grades after that. She doesn't need to buy the workbooks.
