View Full Version : Baby Bjorn Carrier vs Fisher Price Carrier

I got both for my shower and only have a gift reciept for the baby bjorn. They both look similar but I've heard such great feedback for the baby bjorn that I'm hesitant to try others.
Has anyone tried the fisher price carrier?? If so how does it compare to the baby bjorn? Any feedback would be wonderful!

I'd return the bjorn- I thought it was very uncomfortable and luckily we had gotten ours off of CL for cheap...... I probably would see what your baby likes- our DD wasn't really into carriers......
If I was going to get a carrier- I'd look at the ERGO or BECO which have better back support and can be used longer for ages and weights, than the bjorn.

I usually find with carriers that you get what you pay for. I wouldn't keep an FP. Baby carriers aren't their specialty and I would stick with more tried and true brands. Also, the FP one looks more complicated. Most of the best carriers are from smaller scale companies and you may never have heard of them till you start looking. Most stores carry a woeful selection of carriers and that is what most people know about. I personally liked the Bjorn for little ones. It was easy to use and comfortable for me and dh. But, as both boys got bigger I ditched it for different ones. I wasn't very comfy in an Ergo (it just hit me weird) but loved my Beco. The best thing I did was find a baby wearing group in my city so I could get hands on practice with no sales' pressure. Also got to try tons of carriers I ever heard of. Google to see if there is one near you- I went while pg just to get some sling advice then after for practice with my Beco.

Return the Bjorn!!! There are so many other carriers out there that are so much better. The bjorn is a back killer for the person who is wearing the baby. It doesn't have a hip belt, so all the weight is on your shoulders. Like the pp said, take a look at Beco, and also check out www.thebabywearer.com for tons more info on carriers. Personally, I really like wraps for newborns. Moby is very popular, but for a summer baby, I'd get a lighter weight Wrapsody.

I did not even know that FP made carriers. I would definitely return that one. I like my Baby Bjorn Active for the first couple of months. After the 4th or 5th month, we started using an Ergo.

If there's any way to return both (and get just credit for the FP?) I would do that. The Ergo is the one we used with #2 and 3 and loved so much more than the Bjorn.

This is the Fisher Price carrier - I've never even seen it before, and would be curious to know if it helps support the weight of the baby better than the Bjorn.
Honeslty I would return both and get a Moby wrap or Sleepy wrap :).

I would also say return them both. I got a Bjorn for DD1 before I had any idea about babywearing and really, by the time she was 6mos old it just wasn't comfortable. I later got a Beco and an Ergo (I like the Beco better) and can wear her in that now that she's almost 3yo and still be comfortable. I even wore her on my back in September, while 6mos preggo, to climb hill and dale in search of a xmas tree (we tag our tree ahead of time). For DD2 I added a hotsling to my collection which is great for the early months when your LO is small plus it folds up so small I just keep it in the diaper bag for when I'm out and about.

I don't have any experience with either. I think you need to think about how you plan on using a carrier. With my first DD I used a Snugli for the first few months just for short walks and it worked OK since it was all I knew. I researched baby carriers more with my second child and invested in several (pouch sling, mei tai, and Action Baby Carrier SCC). I used the pouch sling and mei tai a lot when she was tiny, now she is 17 mos. and I use the SCC all the time. I found that I used my carriers alot more with my second daughter, since I needed to have hands free to help my first daughter with things!
If you are only going to wear baby for occasional walks when they are tiny, then the FP or Bjorn will probably be fine. If you plan on wearing the baby as you do work around the house, shop, walk at the zoo, etc., then I would return both and invest in something more comfortable that will last you more long term. Even if you can do a store credit for the FP and get diapers or something with your credit, and then use the refund from the Bjorn to purchase another carrier.
If you are planning on babywearing alot, it would be smart to invest in two carriers even (in case one gets dirty and needs washed, or to have a smaller one like a pouch or ring sling to carry along in your diaper bag). Check out places like Frogmama.com (she does returned and open box carriers for sale) and Attachedtobaby.com (she often has stuff on sale - I bought my Slinglings pouch sling from her for a great price), or go to thebabywearer.com and buy a gently used carrier for a good deal. There is also a wealth of info over there about the different types, as well as reviews.

Thanks everyone for all the great feedback. I haven't been able to find where they sell fisher price carriers and I don't have a receipt so I may be stuck with it unless I can sell it on craigslist.
I will definitely look into other carriers....didn't know they had others since most store sell the baby bjorn.
Thanks again for all the help!!!!
