Had my 20 week dr. visit today - I gained 10lbs since my 16 week appointment. :( I seem to recall a similar jump around the same time with DD1, when my appetite came back and my belly "popped". But I still got the lecture about "aggressive weight gain" and "try to gain only a 1/2 lb a week". Yeah, I'll get right on that. It's not like I'm eating a dozen donuts for breakfast, lunch and dinner! :irked:

LOL, whatevs. If that's your pattern, just smile and nod and don't worry about it. Eating healthy foods is the important thing.

I had a month with a big gain like that; next month I didn't gain nearly as much. My doctor commented at that second appt that she was glad to see that I had leveled off a bit - she said that it's very normal to have a month with a big gain and then to slow down a bit. She said that she wouldn't have told me to watch anything unless I had a couple of big gains in a row.

Glad your appetite is back!

:shake: I've been told that fetuses can have growth spurts just like kids. Most of the people I know--including myself--had one month where their weight shot right up, then leveled off in a more consistent increase.

Did you know in the UK they don't even weigh pregnant women (at least not at each regular appointment)?

I recall having a big jump in weight right around 20ish weeks both times, then things slacked off until the end, and not because I changed the good stuff I was eating. I'm heavy anyway, so that might make a difference. I agree with pp - Eating healthy is the most important thing.

:yeahthat: I heard this too. I gained 45lbs with my singleton pregnancies and 55lbs with my twins. Clearly my body has it's own ideas, despite my efforts not to eat so much with the singletons and to pack on the weight for the twins. I agree- WHATEVER DOC!

I gained 130lbs with M and 100lbs with TT. My OBGYN never said anything. I lost the weight after each child.

Whatevs.

I gained 23 lbs while pg w/DS. I gained 0 lbs in the 3rd tri. I lost 5 lbs in the first. So I gained 28 lbs in 3 mos, so 9-10lbs/mo. Nobody ever said boo. Clearly, I did not gain too much weight, but I gained it all at once.

Similar weight gain pattern during my pg w/DD.

Eat healthy and don't worry. Whatever, no two people are the same...

i am a nutrition professional, with a special interest in weight management, and this is absolutely absurd advice. it promotes obsessive eating and calorie counting to the extent that it would take over your life. what if you gain 1.5 pounds in a week instead of 0.5? quick! find 200 calories to cut per day!! so-called "pregorexia" is becoming more common, and this advice from MD's just fuels the problem. IGNORE IT! continue to eat sensibly, stay active within reason, and you and baby will be fine!!

shame on you, doc!!

Try to make good choices, keep the "crap" to a minimum, take your vitamins and forget the rest.

I spent my whole 42 weeks pregnant standing backword on the scale, so I didn't have to see the number. By 16 weeks, all the staff knew not to tell me. :)

Thanks everyone! I am totally in the "whatever" camp, I know my body knows what it needs to do. I was just irked that my doctor made such a big deal about it! Thanks for all your real advice here, it makes much more sense :)
