View Full Version : Soothie Pacifiers and BF.......
First off.....anyone use these??? Pros/Cons?
I used the Mams pacis with DD1.............but I've seen these alot in other babies mouths and I like the idea of the one piece construction.........
Also wondering if you can use these right away while BF.....vs having to wait about 1 month before introducing a paci so as not to create nipple confussion.
Thanks!!

I think parents use them b/c that's what they give you in the hospital.
The rules about not intro'ing too early due to nipple confusion still applies - though use your own discretion with your baby. I intro'd it within the first week with both DS and DD and neither had nipple confusion (and both refused it after a few weeks and were never paci lovers).

i gave the soothie pacifiers sometimes to my DS in the first few weeks and he had zero issues with nipple confusion. often used in the car or somewhere when i couldn't nurse or otherwise help calm him down. i liked them, and they seemed the only pacis that my DS would take (the other ones he would spit right out). and once he was 6 months old, he completely refused pacis, even the soothie ones.

I discovered that my kids had their own pacifier preferences. I had to buy several brands to try out. DD1 only used the non-orthodontic playtex & the nipple had to be the yellow one & not the clear (don't even ask). DD2 only used Avents. DS wouldn't use anything & I tried Soothies, MAM, Avent, and at least 2 other brands.

I really didn't want B to use the Soothies because I think they cover so much of their face and the paci keepers for the soothie are HUGE. But my sister bought them for him and was really excited about them and....... of course those were really the only ones he wanted. I discovered that you can take the plastic ring off the MAM paci keepers and thread the string through one of the holes in the Soothie so you don't have to buy the huge paci keeper. They are extremely easy to keep clean. Now he doesn't want it at all, just his lovey!
ETA: I had to buy sooooooooooo many extra because MILs dog would somehow find them and probably chewed up about 14 of them!!! :hopmad:

I choose soothies for DD b/c there's no BPA (DS took playtex or avent, but preferred Playtex). However, beyond the first few days in the hosp, DD *would not* take a paci at all.
ETA: With DS, we didn't have any problem with a paci and nipple confusion. I would be more concerned about intro a bottle early.

All three of mine nursed and used pacifiers from day one. Sometimes my 3 month old will do this weird thing with his mouth for a few seconds when he tries to nurse, but I just push his head forward onto my breast and he's fine.
I'm so thankful that all 3 of ours would take pacifiers. They are sooooo helpful in the car, in stores, settling down to sleep, etc.! PP was right about Soothies; I didn't even know about them until we got some in the hospital. We used Mams with DD1 and DD2 and Soothies with the new baby.

No nipple confusion here, but part of that might be because DD was a preemie. She practiced sucking on a paci for months before starting on a bottle and then breast.
The hospital had her on the preemie size soothies, and she liked them, but like a PP said, I hated how much the regular soothies cover the face. Look into gumdrop pacis. The same material and nipple shape as soothies, but they're shaped more like a regular pacifier. I loved them - until DD found her thumb and had no more use for a pacifier. :)

We only use the paci for long car rides or if she gets fussy when DH is alone with her. We used Soothies with both kids - silicone made and seemingly good for BFed babies. Didn't use a paci at all till close to 6 weeks. They gave us Soothies in the hosp where DD1 was born but there's a policy in the hosp where DD2 was born against giving pacis because of potential to interfere with BFing success.

This is the paci they give in the NICU. Everytime I see a baby with the paci I think there's a good chace it's a NICU brother/sister of us! :) We stuck with it because that's the one she got used to.
We were given the Soothie at the hospital & it was the only one DD would take. BF with no problems. However, DS used Mams from the time we were at the hospital, and I BF him as well with no problems. No waiting a month. Our Dr. told us that it's rare for a baby to get nipple confusion with a paci since they don't get nourishment from it.
