what kind of carrier do you recommend for a one year old?

i've tried an ergo with her when she was younger, and she hated it even though my son loved loved loved it. i gave up on it and sold it.

then, i bought a babyhawk oh snap and she liked that fine except that the straps bothered me. i didn't like how they cross in the back and the regular way didn't feel so comfortable. also, it felt too big on me. i'm 5'4" and about 130 pounds so i'm not petite or anything. so i returned it.

now all i have is a bjorn, and at 21 pounds and one year, she's too big for that. oh, i also have a hiking backpack, but it's too cumbersome to use everyday. i like structured carriers, so what's great for a one year old? i want to do front and back carries. i won't do the front facing carry... i really want to wear my baby girl, so any recommendations would be much appreciated!

thanks.

There isn't a one size fits all carrier. Carriers are kind of like bras...what fits one person, is super un-comfortable to the another person. Have you checked out thebabywearer forums? You can find a lot of help on picking carriers over there.

At a year, I would go with a ssc like the ergo or beco. I didn't really do any front carries after a year old since it was too uncomfortable. I have a calyx and love it for back carries. Is there a store near you where you can try on carriers? Or perhaps a babywearing group?

When DD got to be about a year, I used a pouch for hip carry a lot. She wanted to get down a lot and walk, so it was easy to put her in and out of the pouch.

I loved my snugli structured carrier until DD hit 20lbs and now its super uncomfortable. I think the weight limit is 20lbs, might be 25. I really like my infantino mei tie and find it very very comfortable with DD. BRU has the new version on display you can try (along with thier version of the ergo) We also use a pouch sling (stretch hot sling) for hip carrys.

I would have said Ergo for sure. Kids change and get used to stuff at different times. My 5 month old hates the Ergo now but I expect her to be happier in it in a month or two.

I have a Beco 4th Generation (older style...no attached infant insert) and I've carried DD1 in it up until 2.5yrs in back carry. I was comfortable and so was she. I'm 5'1" and small framed and I find the Beco fits me better than my Ergo.

When DS outgrew his Bjorn original, we bought a Bjorn active, which goes up to 26 lbs. He was stuck at 22-23 lbs for quite some time so it worked out. He was walking at that stage anyways.

You can also get the new Bjorn comfort which has enhanced/hip support ... I think that goes up to 31 or 32 lbs...

You could try a Boba.

Haha....I was going to suggest the ERGO. I just carried my 22# 1 yo through the pumpkin patch on my back while carrying 40+ # of pumpkins!
