I thought this was supposed to be more prevalent around 12 months, but DS2 (21 months) seems to have a major case of it at the moment. What has been your experience?

We went through two phases of this with each DS. One at 12-14 mo. and one at the same time you mentioned. It took several months to get back on track and for my DC to get comfortable again in a childcare setting.

DS is 19 months and we are having a bad time with it over here lately, too. So I have no advice, but a lot of sympathy!

DD went through that at around 18 months or so. Something clicked for her at around that time, where she realized she didn't want me to leave her. When before she just used to wave bye as I walked into my office, she then would reach out for me, cry and not want me to go. And it affected her sleep too. She was a great sleeper before that and then we eventually resorted to CIO because she had trouble just falling asleep on her own.
DS has always been a little more clingy so his separation anxiety hasn't been as pronounced as it seemed to be for DD, because she always seemed so independent to me. But for her it was a phase, and although she still wants me at times, she now has absolutely no problem being separated from me and would gladly leave me behind anywhere, anyplace!

DS has been going through the same thing for about a month now and he is almost 22 months. I'm surprised he didn't go through it sooner. He doesn't even want daddy sometimes...only me!

dd (20 mo) has been going through this for the past 2 months and it is affecting her sleep to. she loves daycare and one day drop off just got to extremely painful, and she will even refuse to go to dh or my mother who she absolutely adores. she will wake up at least once a night and just cried until i come in and she just wants to hold my hand.
i am being told that there is stranger anxiety at 6-9 mo and separation anxiety at 18-24 mo.

DS (24m) gets hysterical if I walk out of a room without bringing him with me.

Oh goodie. Glad to hear it is still common at this age!

Yes, we had it happen again around 2. It was a shorter stage than when it first happened as babies though, if that's any consolation. :)
